Nearly 60 million Americans are under weather threat alerts as a monstrous winter storm gears up to slam parts of the country with heavy snow and debilitating ice.
Weather experts forecast that impending winter storm Blair will affect sweep across the Great Plains and the Northeast this weekend into early next week, affecting cities such as Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Kansas City, Omaha, St. Louis and Indianapolis.
Forecasters predict that the Rocky Mountain region as well as the Central and Northern Plains areas will be hit by heavy snow, strong winds and freezing rain.
'The storm is shaping up to be the first widespread cross-country winter storm of the season for the central and eastern United States and will negatively affect travel during the final days of the holiday break,' AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
Residents in Wichita, Kansas City and Omaha can expect blizzard-like conditions due to heavy snow and strong winds.
'A wintry mix could start as early as this afternoon and transition to snow Sunday afternoon,' the National Weather Service field office in Kansas City said on X.
'Wind gusts around 35-40 mph on Sunday could yield possible blizzard conditions.'
Over time, the hefty winter storm is expected to shift toward the Missouri region, whose residents should expect similar, hazardous conditions.

We have relatives in KY (wife’s family).
My wife was saying they will probably go to work on Monday anyway.
I was laughing and pointed out they have a very long steep downhill driveway—if they try to leave their truck will end up crashing into their neighbor’s house across the street.
You don’t commute during ice storms—but you may wreck out trying to commute.
Go out tonight and buy your milk and bread!
The milk is out in the barn and the flour is in the basement. Ropes were strung between the house and outbuildings at the end of November.
Almost like we had lived through winters before. :)
Anyone sensible doesn’t move an inch on the roads in DC. In 1990 I got caught in a snowstorm and had to make it from Northern VA to Maryland. The Beltway and major streets were a nightmare. I bailed into Rock Creek Park and there was no traffic, the snow was fresh and gave a bit of traction.
Here in NM we get more snow but it’s not a problem, plus my neighbor has a tractor and plows the whole road and your drive if the gate is open.
Back when I was commuting to work, I would see all sorts of 4WD/AWD vehicles in the medians and ditches, and one of the reasons was that their drivers had no idea that the things might go through snow and mud better, but they were no panacea on ice.
My late FIL used to say that four wheel drive made it likely that you would be about 50 feet further into the drift when someone came to pull you out. He was only half joking when he'd say it.
If you are going to have a french toast snow you should enjoy it.
Nobody is acting like winter is something new.
I’ve been looking at the weather maps and am impressed with the size of this thing. This one is one of the worst forecasts I’ve seen in size and intensity. It has intensified more than they originally expected.
Aside from the snow and ice, there’s a very high potential for tornados across the Gulf states where the temperatures will be warm enough for rain.
Southern storms are named Bubba,
So far only mist here in Missouri. Can’t be worse that 2007 when we had that bad ice storm. Whole area was out of power for 11 days. Luckily we have a Generic. We were out of power for 60 seconds.
Always.
And Sabres.
And even the kids, who grew up in CNY.
I know…I’m seeing all of this on the news. Sending up prayers. Looks like a bad one.
That sounds like a shopping list from my teenage years if we were preparing to TP someone’s house.
I’m 80...every year we have winter storms with various intensity. Why people aren’t stocked up BEFORE winter and don’t keep their gas tank full befuddles me.
Where do you live?????
We deal with nor'easters here in NH but never needed ropes to get around.
(tears welling up). Family.
That’s because far too many people with 4 wheel drive think they don’t need snow tires since they have 4 wheel drive.
Then they drive like idiots because they think they’re invincible. Cause they’re showing off because they have 4 wheel drive.
We have to drive from Houston to Lubbock on Monday for a Tuesday Funeral. I am not looking forward to the Wednesday drive back.
Does not happen every year but sometimes you have a white out. And because we have animals that must be tending twice a day, making staying in the house a non-starter, we put up ropes to make sure we do not find ourselves in the orchard.
You don’t even need a snowstorm to make the Capitol Beltway a parking lot. It becomes that daily during rush hour. 🤪
On the rare occasion I have to drive in that area, I avoid the Beltway like the plague. I did live in northern VA as a teenager and only had to drive in a snowstorm once - from Alexandria to Springfield, where we lived. My mom went weak with relief when I pulled up at our house.
One of my sisters lives in NM now. She doesn’t seem to have any issues driving in the snow.
We’re predicted to have ice and rain tomorrow, so whether or not we’ll be going to church is iffy. So far, we’ve had no snow at all, but at night it gets below freezing.
I’ll be damned...it’s winter.
