The Garden Thread - January, 2025
January 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/01/2025 7:08:47 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

ECGC is a great substitute for quercetin. We swap the two out from time to time.

I’m glad you know about zinc and ECGC. You’ll come across it soon, and if not, lots of places carry them these days.

*** My daughter went shopping and found that all the bananas and whole cream were gone. ***

Just rereading posts. I was at a few grocery stores today. Reminded me of early pandemic days when supply chain issues went bonkers. Shelves were empty all over the stores. Different departments, too.

I made choices based on what was available and looked good.

I got the last package of the kind of bacon we like. Had to scrounge around for it.

Amazingly, people were actually well-behaved for the most part. I sorta figured that people might go a little cray- cray on the day before the storm arrives, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Mom has zinc/quercetin - will probably just borrow some of hers & order more for myself.

I “educated” myself early during the WuFlu days, followed Dr. Z’s protocol & got my folks on it, too. When FLCCC started up, I added in some of their early treatments & preventatives. Then I added herbal medicine (Drs. Ardis, Schmidt & Ealy). It’s been a journey, but an interesting one & definitely beneficial. A garden priority is to reestablish my medicinal herb garden this spring.

We’re heading out on Monday to cash in scrap metal and aluminum cans, return some unneeded electrical part for a dryer, Menard’s Run, lunch and comparison shopping for the UTV Beau has his eye on. (He’s gotten one price, now it’s time to DICKER - his favorite part, LOL!) I’m bringing a book. ;)

My Menard’s List - so far:

Veggie and Flower Seeds (They carry Burpee brand; thumbing thru catalog to see if they have what I would normally buy)
Trays & Plugs (some of mine are way over-used)
Suet
Canning Lids - Wide Mouth & Regular
Mrs. Wages Mixes
Fresh, 2’ light bulbs for my grow light rack

Nothing against you, but I’m hoping it ALL stays south of ME! We’ll have our turn in the barrel this winter, too. :(

happy to report I just fired up the wood stove with the help of a brown 15% off bag. Elec is out. Everything’s got 1/8” coating of ice. Joy

WxRisk (the weather met I follow) issued his “first call” map last night ... he’s got us in a snow band of 8-10” with a possible 10-12” in some places. We might get some sleet, but that is more to the south & there is heavy freezing rain also to the south.

Last year, my cousin gave me the name/number of her landscaper - he does snow removal in the winter. We never had enough on our driveway to use him, but anything over 2-3 inches will probably require clearing. Our PU is not 4-wheel drive & while mom’s car is front wheel, it has very low clearance.

I did text the cousin who cleaned out the pole shed & hauled gravel for me last spring to see if he does snow removal on the side - I don’t think he does, but if so, I’d rather pay him than a stranger. He’s in church this morning so I won’t here from him until later.

Mom wanted to get a snow blower - the one I want is $1,400. Last winter, it would not have been used so I was reluctant to spend that $$ as we had other ‘new house’ expenses (tree removal, automate 14’ shop garage door, roof repair, stair lift, etc). Now I am wondering if I made a mistake saying ‘no’. The guy I talked to was going to be about $75 a trip - lots of trips before we get to $1,400, but the trick is getting him when you want/need him.

Of course, our housewarming party is the 12th & temps will not be above freezing all week so no melting AND another storm is forecast for next weekend, too.

It’s supposed to hit us tonight & not clear out until Tuesday morning.

My goal today is to get mulch down around my paver sidewalk & put any extra bags in the barn. I also have to rearrange the shop garage contents enough to squeeze the car in there. It would be easier to move the mower (in the attached house garage) to the shop & put the car in the house garage, but it would be easier to get the car put of the shop & started down the driveway, especially if I can’t get snow removal.

I decided to go yesterday because IF the snow was bad, I’d rather do my errands when the roads are good.

The only stuff I got was the bird food, mostly suet blocks that the birds like, that I can’t find elsewhere.

I think your bag will be stuffed to the brim, the same as mine was.

Great idea on the borrowing. I keep us up all vitamins and supplements. I’m not in the mood to use pharmaceuticals for every little thing as we get older.

A medicinal herb garden sounds great!

My PU is 4x4 but truck has no heat/defrost & the windshield has 1/8” of ice on it. If they don’t get electric back on for us 33 lucky households soon, I have a book to read - 4 season growing.

Smacked the tunnel plastic several times and cleared a 1 ft circle of ice off it. LOL It’s just going to have to handle whatever build up it gets. Maybe when it’s thicker, it will bust off easier.

Will be cooking on wood stove today. I had coffee but Jason hasn’t so I’m going to use the Moka Pot and make him some turbo coffee. :)

Nice to have the ability to make do and get thru. Tapping on tablet to type sucks tho.

The only ‘pharmaceuticals’ I will take these days are an antibiotic if appropriate & absolutely necessary ... and ivermectin & other recommended treatments for COVID (per FLCCC).

Mom is 91 & on only 2 prescription drugs: BP & thyroid. She had a head cold about 3 weeks ago & I treated her with elderberry tea & doubling up on her vitamins & she felt better the next day & kicked the cold in about 3 days total.

I usually have everything on hand, but the move has obviously messed me up. I kept my supplements in a kitchen cabinet - fortunately, the main ones traveled back & forth with me during all the moving & in the meanwhile, mom packed the kitchen cabinets which was zinc, EGCG & probably selenium.

BTW, I ended up with a crushing headache yesterday & finally broke down & took 2 ibuprofen which didn’t get rid of it, but made it tolerable. This morning, I realized the problem ... no caffeine. I did not drink coffee yesterday, just started on elderberry tea. Dumb me!! This morning I took a caffeine pill & the slight headache I had is mostly gone & I feel about 90% normal except for a nose ‘faucet’. I decided after the first of the year to get off coffee so I have been weaning off the caffeine withdrawal with pills & just totally forgot with the head cold issue.

My cousin got back in touch - all he has is a snow shovel, but said he would come over & hand shovel for us. Our driveway is so long, I think we’d have to provide ‘3 hots & a cot’ before he would finish. I told him I shoveled snow at the other house & can do it here .... if he ever puts a blade on his PU & gets in the snow removal business, to let me know. He’s mid-20’s & a really sweet guy.

Meanwhile, my youngest brother is taking great delight in sending me various “dire” weather forecast maps ... he’s 4 hours southeast & out of major accumulation danger.

I love that your mom only takes 2 pharmaceuticals at her age! It’s a testament to taking care of yourself and not getting caught up in everything the doctors say. They hand out drugs like candy.

It’s easy to forget about caffeine withdrawal producing headaches. I can’t have much caffeine because of my restless legs. 1 cup of coffee in the morning for me, and that one cup is half decaf.

I do keep ibuprofen on hand and usually if I take 3 instead of 2, it gets rid of a headache pretty quickly. That time I had CoVid, a raging headache was my first real symptom. Nipped that in the bud, thankfully.

It sounds like you’ll be finished with this cold in just another day or two.
