I am not starting a debate about the pros and cons of confession. If you want a debate, go start a thread on the Religion Forum.

But a quick internet search confirms that opening or walking through these doors does nothing with regard washing away the stain of mortal sin. Nor is the Church making such a claim.

Removing mortal sin can be achieved only through a valid confession, holy unction, and/or perfect contrition.

Let's review some basics:

1. Walking through the "holy doors", or actually the pilgrimage necessary to get to them, combined with meeting the "usual conditions" (a good confession, the devout reception of holy communion, and prayers for the intention of the Pope) earns one an indulgence. (Note for the Protestant fire-breathers: there is no charge; it is completely free.)
2. An indulgence frees one from purgatory. Since only the saved can even get to purgatory, it has nothing to do with "avoiding eternal damnation".
3. Why would the Daily Mail get something so basic so completely wrong? Well, it's a secular paper in a traditionally anti-Catholic, and now just plain anti-Christian, country. Don't worry, they hate evangelicals as much as they hate Catholics. Muslims, on the other hand ...

When will people realize that Catholicism is a total made up religion. First off, name me one author of the New testament that knew Jesus, was there at the Crucifixion or anybody else that was there for the resurrection. Did any of his disciples write anything down and as a matter of fact Jesus never wrote anything down, the church was nothing more than an avenue to control people. It also spread to the protestants. MLK hated the jews after he could not recruit them, his writings tell that story. So sick and tired of Christian religion brainwashing people because that is the same tactic Islam uses. More people have been killed over religion issues than any other political issue.
