I am not starting a debate about the pros and cons of confession. If you want a debate, go start a thread on the Religion Forum.

But a quick internet search confirms that opening or walking through these doors does nothing with regard washing away the stain of mortal sin. Nor is the Church making such a claim.

Removing mortal sin can be achieved only through a valid confession, holy unction, and/or perfect contrition.

The headline is fake news.

I lived there. I saw the door (one of them). They said they open them every 50 years and if you walk through all of your sins are forgiven. You may read what you like. I was there and that’s what they told us. My catholic neighbors believed this.
