Shot a treed bear?
I’m no hunter so I’m speaking from a position of ignorance but is that an acceptable way to harvest a bear?
At the very least it sure doesn’t sound very sporting
One of the hunters shot the bear, and it struck Harvey as it fell.
I always heard that when shooting bears out of trees you should get out of the way.
Shooting a treed bear is not sporting. Standing under a treed bear while your hunting party shoots at it is worthy of a Darwin Award.

Hounds are used to track, chase, and tree the animal. His hunting buddy must have shot the animal without giving him any warning.
Common practice when hunting black bear and cougar.
Hunters that use dogs hunt like this. I don’t hunt black bear because we don’t have a season in CT. I would think that you would stand clear when someone shot a treed bear. This poor guy must not have known the guy was shooting the bear. I would think that the bear landed on him and probably broke his neck.
No, it's not.
The traditional way is to throw down your weapon, remove your shirt and taunt the bear till it comes down. Then kill it Dan'l Boone style.
It's an acceptable way to harvest raccoons that you also hunt with dogs. If you are hunting a bear with dogs eventually it is going to climb a tree. Does that make it off-limits? Good luck enforcing that if you allow dog hunting of bears.
Yes a very fun and exciting way to hunt bears.
Like your tagline.
I would guess it might be more sporting to be able to capture the bear in a safe manner, and send it to a wildlife preserve or a DNA/genome repository, or a zoo somewhere. Killing a treed bear with a high powered rifle is much easier, almost unfair.. However, I would think that if bear killed a human being, or unnecessarily attacked humans, or was eaten by hungry, starving people it would be ok to kill the bear...
IMHO....flames accepted.
Well, how do you think people shoot squirrels?
