Democrats need to understand being relatable is more important than being right
The Hill ^ | 11/14/24 | Kurt Bardella

When you look at the breadth of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, it’s impossible to pin Democratic losses on just one or two things. This is not a situation where the outcome would have been different if President Biden had done X or Vice President Kamala Harris had done Y.

In fact, had both Biden and Harris done everything “right,” Trump likely still would have won. The culprit for the Democratic Party’s sweeping losses is bigger than any one particular candidate.

In 2016, I left the Republican Party and became a Democrat. In many ways, I feel as if the GOP left me rather than the other way around.

But over the eight years since, I’ve often observed that Democrats approach elections — and communicating with voters — through a lens of how they think the world should be, rather than meeting them in the world as it actually is.

Well, by gosh, I think he's on to something. Maybe by actually promising policies that accommodate the real world, rather than trying to implement utopian horse s***, they can win elections honestly, rather than steal them.

And the same thing can happen to ideas if they are also conceived in an atmosphere of intellectual incest.

Good point. Their ideas were never challenged in academia. So they never had to evaluate and adjust their issues and see if a majority of Americans agree with them.

Seriously, how many R’s switch to D’s? Especially when there’s an entire ‘walk away’ movement on YouTube of people narrating why they left the D’s.

And again, they always seem to think it’s about ‘messaging’...not having wrong ideas. They’re so stubbornly arrogant they don’t even consider being ‘wrong’. So the only question they have is “how do we communicate our message more effectively?”.

Inevitably, it ends up just name-calling people to shame them and shut them up. It doesn’t convince people of anything, then they vote....and the D’s are ‘shocked’ again. I think, ultimately, identity politics is all about crafting a narrative for individual demographics and trying to tell each group they’re stupid for not going along with the narrative, because “how can you not vote in your best interests?”. It’s just a ‘shut up and vote how we tell you to’ narrative, dissention will be shamed.

That’s all they have. Then you look at their ideas...men can be women. Fetus’ aren’t human. God has no place in their platform. Policies causing inflation, mandating EV’s, all energy being ‘renewables’, allowing an invasion, endless socialist programs, etc... At the end of the day, these utopian promises die the death they deserve....especially when presented together as a platform.

But no, it’s not the ideas, just the messaging...because it can’t be that they’re wrong.

“In 2016, I left the Republican Party and became a Democrat.”

No credibility. I could see not being on a team at all but do this? In 2016? Piss poor judgement and insane.

This is essentially "we have to find new lies to tell." Perfectly predictable.

The problem with identity politics is that over time its appeal is to successively smaller and less "relatable" groups, setting the others at one another's throats in pursuit of a larger portion of a shrinking pie. Over time this is the exact opposite of "relatable", it's Balkanizing and decreasingly effective at building the mass populist movement that will win elections. There is, as well, an ingrained tendency on the part of progressives to wish to change everything but themselves, believing that they are the exemplars of moral perfection and that it is only others who need to change or be changed by coercion. They aren't listening to "relatable".

Trying to be *relatable* is what cost the democrats the election.

But leave it to them to double down on the losing proposition.

The Dems thought that all of their anti Trump hoaxes and rhetoric would fuel their election victory. They were wrong. They’re going to have to find something else to talk about. I expect nationalized health care will make a comeback.

I still think Kamala’s great failing was that she refused to say a single thing to the voters about how dangerous Trump was...

Every Democrat in the party is a Progressive. They need to go back to win they won elections with Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. They were Pragmatists. They're also Southern Governors.

More likely they'll double down with somebody like Gavin Newsom.

The quest for relatability goes to the heart of their conceit and deception.
