If you’ve ever seen the iconic “Modern Family” clip where Mitchell is increasingly bothered that people in France know he’s American just by looking at him — that is, until he purchases an outfit from a local store and fits in with the locals — you’ll understand the plight of American tourists. Sometimes, even with the right language skills or a demure presence, our clothes alone give us away.
This is because Americans have a specific way of dressing, stylists say, whether they’re visiting Europe, Asia or another locale. And while fashion is different in every city and every country (and among different groups in said place), Americans still manage to stick out no matter where they are.
Below, stylists from around the world share the styles that make Americans stand out from locals and how to dress like an international traveler instead.
Wearing Athletic Wear
Being Too Dressy
Having Perfect Makeup And Hair
Wearing Too Many Logos
Dressing Too Beachy
Don’t be afraid to try out new styles and get inspiration from the world around you

I make the dealer take off their labels if they want a sale.
Yes.
I can’t recall the last time I saw that, though.
The Brits not rinsing the soapy foam off their dishes, just wiping to dry it off before putting them away, as they wash them is just weird and gross.
And that doesn't change for many of them when they go overseas. I live in a village in Sicily that gets its fair share of tourists, usually in the spring and summer. I can spot the Americans from a mile away: Most are seriously overweight, unkempt looking, silly hair colors on the women and most dress like overgrown children or more upscale homeless people. I cringe when I see them.
Between the Brits, Germans and Norwegians who visit here, Americans top the list as far as undignified, ridiculous appearance goes. And believe me, plenty of the Western Europeans dress like idiots and clowns too.
I guess it's all a result of the "My Truth" and "Who the hell are you to tell me how to act" mentalities mainlined into the West by the vile, degenerate, Godless, human-hating Left.
What are you going to believe? What actually happened or the film?
I did not know that until you set me straight, but I prefer the famous film quote. Regardless, neither quote was available as a magnet that I could find, thought it’d be easy to get one, silly me.
Is it because you have bad teeth?
Yup easy to detect a foreigner (Falang) in Thailand. First question a bar girl asks “Where you frommmm?”
50 years ago when I was a young, single Airman stationed in the UK loved going to Cambridge during the summer and pickup on American college girls visiting the city. Could spot them a mile away. Good times.
He was Hispanic. He was not Italian. I am not sure If he was from Mexico or Central/South America.
The Dodgers had just won the World Series. Baseball is very popular in all South/Central American and Caribbean countries.
In the Dominican Republic Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz are God like figures. So, a lot of DC kids wear Red Sox gear.
He was a Hispanic tourist. I figured he was from either California or Mexico. Maybe even South America. He spoke Spanish.
I saw a lot of socks and sandals in Bar Harbor, ME this summer. Also, a lot of brand new LL Bean hiking boots.
I am a firm believer that men’s feet should only be exposed to the public either at the beach or around the pool. Buy yourself some Sperry topsiders or Sabago boat shoes. Cover those things up.

And often you can hear them from the same distance. ;)
Yes, the very beginning of covid-19 in the winter of 2020 they locked down all of Italy. Especially Milan because that is the center of the fashion industry. All of those expensive designer garments are produced in the Milan area. Many Chinese immigrants work there.
We had a guide who took us to the Acadamia in Florence. This is the museum where the original statue of David by Michaelangello has been housed since 1889. When they moved it inside from its original outside location since 1503.
She told us that during that year of 2020 they were locked down for about a YEAR. They could NOT leave their apartments if you lived in the city of Florence. You would order groceries and the government had people that would bring it to your apartment. She lived outside of the city so it was not too bad for her.
Since covid the tourist industry in Italy has gone crazy. She basically was working as a tour guide 7 days a week.
She spoke Italian, Spanish, German and English. She was a former school teacher. She also said she paid 52% in taxes.
We were there the first two weeks in October. When it was supposed to be slow. It was still very busy. As was Sorrento/Amafi and Rome.
True!
Awwww....living in a village in Sicily.
I envy you, my FRiend. 😁
Very cute! Sitting here chuckling.
Actually, I have very healthy and orthodontically straightened teeth.
I have very British facial features inherited from my English immigrant grandmother her Puritan heritage husband, who by the way, had very bad teeth. :)
