I blame him for ‘Highlander 2’ and ‘Caddyshack 2’.
Nice try Francis, but Planet of the Apes had sequels before you! I’m pretty sure there’s a bunch of others as well, but this was the first to come to mind
Even his “bad” movies look good. I love the look of his period pieces (”Cotton Club”, “Peggy Sue Got Married”, “Tucker”)
This is not so much about sequels, it’s about naming the 2nd “Part II” and the next “Part III”.
He should only be embarrassed by Part 3.
Well but wasn’t Godfather II supposedly better than The Godfather. I’ve never seen it but I’ve seen that said many times.
What about not sequels but stuff inspired by ad0infinitem?
For example, say Disco Godfather?
Maybe it’s time I watched The Godfather Part II. What do you think?
The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear
“Blues Brothers 2000” (released in 1998) was pretty bad.
It was fun to see some of the old characters back in the sequel (ex: the owner of Bob’s Country Bunker) but it was just not the same.
All things considered, the sequel shouldn’t have been made.
VERY, VERY Highly recommended!
Planet of the Apes came out in 1968. Beneath the Planet of the Apes came out in 1970. Escape from the Planet of the Apes came out in 1971. Just an example of how the premise of the article is flawed. Actually 2 examples. Planet of the Apes had 2 more sequels and a TV show before the complete remake and the sequels to the remakes. How many Godfather movies were there?
Beetlejuice 2 was pathetic.
Not really my area but I will opine anyway. Sequels that are written for the sole purpose of being a sequel will not fare well.
Hollywood has been making sequels since the beginning. Coppola had nothing to do with it.
I loved Rocky 38
Well there was many shows with sequels long before this.
Sherlock Holmes
Charlie chan
Nancy Drew
literally hundreds...
Sequels don’t work unless it’s an ongoing uninterrupted story.
You can never recapture lightning.
Add woke and you’re doomed.
He flatters himself. Blake Edwards released the original “the Pink Panther” film in 1963, then two sequels before the original “The Godfather” was released, then six more sequels after.
Compared to Blake Edwards, Franny is a piker.
There were plenty of sequels way before 1974. Think of old Republic serials going back to the late 1930s, and the Topper or Abott And Costello or Bowery Boys movies. There are plenty.
“The Thin Man” series would like to have a word. The thin man himself cannot speak, as HE DIED IN THE FIRST FILM.
