In some languages “great” is the same as “fat.” Amenhotep the Corpulent is more like it.
And why is it “great” rulers give so little attention to the quality of their successors? How great was A3 that he didn’t prevent A4? (Akhenaton, a dynasty wrecker if ever there was one.)
Wasn’t long before Louis XIV was out and Louis XVI was in; likewise Alexander II of Russia and his unsuitable grandson Nicholas. Won’t even get started on Napoleon, and Ottoman sultans too numerous to mention.
Don’t make an empire if you can’t make an heir!
Amenhotep III probably wasn’t the one who did the empire building in Egypt. He inherited an empire and left it to the care of the powerful military of the time, and a capable team of administrators. Credit is also due his ancestors, especially Ahmose I.
