The Cypro-syllabic script was the characteristic type of script used in Cyprus during the 1st millenium BC for writing the Greek language. It was mainly use by the city-kingdoms up to the 4th century BC, when it was replaced by the Greek alphabet. Decipherment of the script began in 1871 and today 58 linear symbols are known, with five representing vowels. The wider Paphos area has yielded a large number of inscriptions on tombs and in sanctuaries. -- V1.1 - April 2016
