Revealed: Meaning of cryptic message written on bullets assassin used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as his wife reveals his family had received mystery 'threats'
Daily Mail UK ^ | December 5, 2024 | James Reynolds

he words scrawled on the bullets used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson closely resemble the title of a book criticizing insurance companies and the tactics they use to deny claims, it has been revealed.

Health insurance boss Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and calf early on Wednesday by a masked man who appeared to be waiting for him outside the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, before succumbing to his injuries in hospital.

Detectives investigating the shooting reportedly found shell casings with the words 'depose', 'deny' and 'defend' inscribed on them.

They are now working to determine what the words mean and if they could possibly hint at a motive for the slaying of the 50-year-old.

Curiously, the messages bear similarity to the title of a 2010 book on 'why insurance companies don't pay claims and what you can do about it', called 'Delay, Deny, Defend'.

Critics allege the tactic is used by insurance companies to 'ensure your claim is either never paid or paid at a rate far below what you deserve'.

The revelation came as Mr Thompson's grieving widow, with whom he has two sons, claimed that her husband had received threats before he was shot.

'There had been some threats,' Paulette Thompson, 51, told NBC News as she broke her silence in her first comments since her husband was killed.

I mean what do you have to be to get NY LEO to give a crap, be a CEO of an insurance company?

The stunning video combined with the high profile target is going to be newsworthy and get great coverage.

True...I was just stressing that we shouldn’t rule out a simple money motive that is completely unrelated to a specific patient encounter our outcome.

ie, criminal or dirty money.

Revenge killing is the first thing I thought of but words scrawled on a bullet might be meant to misleadingly point to revenge I’d look good and hard at the missus. That shooting looked fairly amateur though.

America has not fallen that far yet. Only a yellow-bellied, coward shoots somebody in the back. A shickenchit yellow coward.

This whole thing reads like a bad high school play.

This is going to make a good “made for TV” movie that will be a drama, but will come across as a comedy of fools.

"The stunning video combined with the high profile target..."

Lots of murders are caught on video these days, it's easy to spend a great deal of time watching people die on camera...as for high profile target, I bet many of the people murdered in NY have families that consider them just as important as this CEO, I am sure his family is grieving I just wonder why his murder is seen as more important than the hundreds of others, there is a disfunction going on in our society and how we view people is out of joint.

The murder happened in front of a midtown Manhattan hotel.

That is kinda bad for tourism—therefore top priority.

Finding the perp—and proving it was personal—keeps the tourist sheeple calm.

What did you expect him to do, hand the CEO a gun and say, let's draw for it?

I’ve worked with CEOs before. One of them had a driver. None of them had “security.” Fortune 500 CEOs don’t normally get gunned down in the streets of the US.

Obviously, that has changed. But “security” is not a normal thing for every day living.

The purpose of ‘Delay, Deny, Defend’ on the shells may be misdirection. I.e., What if the assassin wants the investigator to look for a disgruntled insurance user when in fact the killer is simply a paid assassin for reasons (jealously/business/mob/payback) TBD .

There is ZERO empathy on the internets for this guy. In fact, there is outright joy.

Gonna be a lot of jobs in security in the future.

I think it was obvious that this killing was a response to a loved one whose medical claim was denied, and they died as a result. For it has all the earmarks of a revenge killing, to me at least.

Sound to me like your assessment is the correct one. Scratching the words on the cartridges tells me the guy was seething with anger over a medial claim denial that lead to the death of a loved one. The guy is likely former/present military/law enforcement by the way he handles and clears the weapon.

She’s 51? Probably the first wife. My guess would be the grief-o-meter is coming in low.

“...why insurance companies don’t pay claims and what you can do about it’, called ‘Delay, Deny, Defend’.”

Not just health insurance. My son was t boned by a red light runner last May. Witness and police report so stated. Her insurance company has thus far refused to pay damages. Furthermore, the sonsofbitches had the gall to sic a collection agency on my son to pay for their insured! Issue pending with lawyer.
