he words scrawled on the bullets used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson closely resemble the title of a book criticizing insurance companies and the tactics they use to deny claims, it has been revealed.
Health insurance boss Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and calf early on Wednesday by a masked man who appeared to be waiting for him outside the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, before succumbing to his injuries in hospital.
Detectives investigating the shooting reportedly found shell casings with the words 'depose', 'deny' and 'defend' inscribed on them.
They are now working to determine what the words mean and if they could possibly hint at a motive for the slaying of the 50-year-old.
Curiously, the messages bear similarity to the title of a 2010 book on 'why insurance companies don't pay claims and what you can do about it', called 'Delay, Deny, Defend'.
Critics allege the tactic is used by insurance companies to 'ensure your claim is either never paid or paid at a rate far below what you deserve'.
The revelation came as Mr Thompson's grieving widow, with whom he has two sons, claimed that her husband had received threats before he was shot.
'There had been some threats,' Paulette Thompson, 51, told NBC News as she broke her silence in her first comments since her husband was killed.

Yeah, furthermore, if you go to a convention or meeting, you usually always go with someone else too. Just weird the shooter knew he was coming out early and alone.
The bullet writing might just be a mislead. They shooter might be writing it just to make it seem like a disgruntled customer.
How did the killer know that he would be attending a 7:00 am meeting at the Hilton? Suggests inside job. Words on the bullet casings may be a diversionary tactic. All the markings of a professional hit.
Shareholders meeting, which certainly had a invite with time, place and company speakers.
Expert?
Actually, all that money makes the case for revenge even more likely to be the motive.
Have Medicare here. Devoted PPO. Through trickery I was denied reimbursement. In the end, the plan is being canceled in my county. Never got the $$$.
On the bright side of things...his family doesn’t have to worry about needing health insurance for him any longer.
One groan only, Vasili.
Killer looks young, maybe his wife was denied treatment and died.
And he dropped a cellphone + used a city electric bike? There may be some really smart or really dumb activity going on here to be sloppy or create a false track. Anyone who would kill someone is most likely to be erring on the side of being dumb. Sure they might have a 180 IQ. But there are some loose screws. With all the types of cameras we have + many other sources of information, the ability of the bad guys to outdo LE on investigations is getting much harder to do.
If LE is willing to do exhaustive research they could probably track his activities down for hours beforehand + possibly the same afterwards. 3 big challenges working against them are: (1) it’s a big city and easier to be lost in the crowd, (2) it’s wintertime and he wasn’t the only one wearing extra layers of clothing, (3) NYC is a sanctuary city so the possibilities of cruminal activity are much more than they should be and thus criminals can plan, execute, and clean up activities more discreetly than in law-abiding communities.
I am betting the care was denied to a child with a serious illness needing ongoing type care!! Parents become full of RAGE when it comes to their kids!!
If this happened at the insurance company that I had recently, they would have had tens of thousands of suspects.
Bodyguards are expensive.
Obvious cost cutting measure to forego using them.
“....saved the company $1.2 million per year...”
Grudging respect for a man who stands by his convictions.
Yup—these were false leads left to draw investigators away from the wife.
Note they fit her narrative.
That is what is called a “clue”.
Either the kids or his wife seem possible.
“I have United and have never been denied either”
The plural of anecdote is not data. United has the highest claims denial rate and it isn’t even close.
The hit man really stands out in a crowd in New York City.
He is not brown enough.
:-)
Is it possible that he was involved in some chicanery with the Biden deep state? I mean it’s already been demonstrated how much the tech sector is. Anything connected with the medical establishment has been demonstrated to be pretty untrustworthy the less four years
Probably the least likely scenario, but maybe too early to write it off completely.
Where was his Security Detail?
