No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

It was a little warmer than it has been this morning. Our guessed high is a little higher, too. It’s still not feeling like August weather. They’re still guessing we’ll get some rain this evening.
My house keys fell out of my pocket at the gym yesterday evening. That wasted a lot of my time going back to fetch them. Fortunately, they were still lying right there where I expected them to be.
I decided not to look up my last 2 Wordle guesses because lazy. I might have gotten this one in 4.

We’re still trying to get Epic Fail Lawn Service to finish the mowing. They have to recharge the mower batteries, but meanwhile, it gets deeper and deeper!

Mower battery charge speed vs. grass growth speed. I don’t think I’ve seen the green study on that.
I know I’m not guaranteed to have my blower/trimmer battery charged in the time it takes me to mow the lawn with my gas-powered mower.
We got a new Ryobi string trimmer a couple of years ago, it works well but I notice that it runs down the 6Ah batteries pretty quickly...

Having dinner with my folks after work. Parents and Sisters frequently split a cow from a local butcher and they need to clear some ribeyes from the freezer to make room. They’ve never tried reverse searing their steaks... so I’m running the grill for this.

We’ve been doing the reverse sear for the past few years and really like the results... 🥩
Our first assignment in Drama class was a short presentation to the class. My topic was "Chemistry Fun at Home", as I enjoyed tinkering with the chemistry sets my parents bought for me.
My introduction consisted of setting a firecracker off in the classroom. LOL, I never expected the sound of the blast to be so amplified, but my ears were ringing for at least 15 minutes.
I received an A for the presentation, the teacher lauded my "originality." There was no disciplinary action taken, I can only imagine the consequences if that stunt were tried today.
Back then, California public schools were excellent, and I was educated well. In 5th grade, Animal Farm was read, and discussed, in class. In 6th grade, dittos for The Count of Monte Cristo. During my senior year, my courses of study included Physics, Civics, and Calculus. I was also the lab assistant for the Chemistry class.
And undoubtedly eyeing the freshly dry cleaned white drapes.
Reverse searing. Is that gniraes?
Oh yes, we often chuckle about the “mischief” we got on with as kids many decades ago... nowadays we would have been brought up on serious felony charges for some of them!
And yes, education was so much better all around...
