No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
Hopefully his bladder as well!

I have a couple of schools I work with as client... Everyone is gearing up for the fresh education season.
I hope the schedules work out for everyone.
I already don’t like the handle bars. 12” ape hangers on a 4” riser with rubber mounts. Way too much leverage and it gives a “bounce” or “loose” feel to steering that I find objectionable.
Ordering some 7 1/2” mini-ape drag bars and solid standard height riser mounts. Should still be a little higher than Abby, but still at or below shoulder height.
Seemed to run and shift good. Low gears for the first 2 off the line so it “feels” faster than it’s 60+ horsepower would suggest. For comparison, Abby has 92 HP stock... and she isn’t stock any more. :-)
For all intents and purposes, a transaxle differential is a two-sided PTO in that it accepts splined shafts from both sides and directs engine power to them.
Any shaft having the same diameter and spline count could be driven off that interface; it doesn’t have to be automobile wheels.
Maybe I need to divert my old car to agricultural purposes...

Takes me back to an old “golden age of radio” record set my parents had. In the comedy record there was a Baron Munchausen sketch where he mentioned something happening on “Vetneshday”. Charlie asked, “Vetneshday?” “Yes, Vetneshday”.
Yeah, I’m not sure that I would like the “flex” of rubber mounts in the steering mechanics... prefer it to be very tight and controlled... sounds like a good mod right off the bat...

You should be able to find historical rainfall numbers (often by month) for your area to see how this summer compares... ours are pretty steady from year to year: we don’t much rain at all from June through September... 🤷🏽♂️

Thursday. Cool-ish. A little fog over the hilltops, and clousy over The Bay, but it’ll probably burn off by Noon.
Haven’t found a shop willing to touch my transmission. General sentiment is, “Yeah, we handle everything EXCEPT that one. For THAT we send people to the Dealership.”
I’m less intimidated. I just want a shop to take a used unit from LKQ and swap it in there for me, but it’s beginning to look like I’ll be doing it myself on my garage floor.
