No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
I wondered when you mentioned that... they often make you jump through ridiculous hoops just to be able to use your own property...
I’m pretty skilled, though. I had 4 greens once and took 2 tries to get the win from there.
At this point you should be able to get a certified death certificate from the county where the person died. It will probably cost something. I’d double check with the DMV that a certified death certificate is as good as a notarized signed affidavit from the executor. It should be, but this is gubmint.
They gave me a form to take to the executor. Tried calling the auction place... they don’t give out that kind of info. Looked up the address on the title... Someone else lives there now...
Think that’d work? It IS the Minnesota DMV/DNR after all...
If they challenge you, just ask them if they’re munchkinphobes. Tell them that you’ll be speaking to Peter Dinklage about mandatory inclusivity training if they continue this bigoted behavior.

The youngest of my kids starts High School today.
The next youngest begins her Senior year next Monday.
They’re at different schools for reasons that turn out to involve a stroke of genius.
Car things are resolving. Zelle is worthless, BTW. Can’t conduct any appreciable commerce given the limits imposed by individual banks. Had to pay an additional 3.25% credit card transaction fee because Zelle won’t let me transact more than $500 at a time, and not more than $1,000 in any 30-day period.
The heads of Zelle are rumored to believe that their company offers a “service.”

When we decided to put the deposit down for our landscaping I didn’t want to put it on the credit card because our credit reports would have lit up. We normally don’t carry a balance that high. So I moved the money into the account that has a debit card and gave the landscaping people my debit card number.
Turns out the bank wouldn’t transact that much from the debit card. But I called them and they authorized it for a 24 hour period, which was long enough. The landscapers tried again and all was good.
I guess, on the one hand, the protections are nice. But on the other hand, it’s my money, let me use it, please.
When I bought my Honda last year, I wrote a check for $45,000.
School starts already. That’s just nuts. All our community college and university kids start on the 17th. I’ll be taking care of my granddaughter two mornings and two afternoons during the week. I forget which ones, but I have a chart in a notebook.
Tracking family activities is a full-time job.
I think Young ArGee is already back in her classroom, although not with students yet.
The local district has kids in the classrooms on Aug 27.

Temps were back in the 70s this morning - a little more like August (I think).
Some animal left a gift in our mulch bed overnight. It looked like it had dug out a space but not tried to cover it up. The gift looked a little large for a cat. So I don’t know what it was. I managed to move the gift out into the tree stand in the back yard where, hopefully, it will become fertilizer.
A lucky guess on row 2 gave me lots of ammunition to solve this in 3.

I tried a different approach this morning... instead of just ignoring them until it is light enough for them to go outside... I yelled to them, “It’s still Sleepy Time, time for Sleepy!” a few times. That is what I tell them when they go to bed at night... and it worked, we all fell back to sleep until I heard them around 7:30...

Well, sort of. Abby is having rear wheel issues. I think it’s either a bearing or the cush drive damper. Something is definitely loose. Have parts on order, but not sure how many will come in for the weekend. New tire, bearings, and a new polymer dampener are on the way... but the dampener might not get here until September.
There are things I can do to keep her going until then, like cutting up an inner tube to use as rubber shim stock... but those are temporary.
All that being said... I drove my truck to a client site today on a bright, warm but still cool, day... Much sadness.
Although, took tomorrow off to go fishing with my Dad... so things aren’t that bad. He’s 80 and is convinced that every one of these trips could be his last time fishing the River. For me, every opportunity counts...
