Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Enjoy!

Sometimes it is nice to splurge a little on things like that!

I found an app for my phone called “Precip” that seems to be good about predicting rainfall. More importantly, it shows past rainfall amounts for my location. So far its rain forecasting has been better than the other tools I’ve seen.

I think the closest thing to that I ever did was light a firecracker that I found. It was safely in the middle of the street so the only damage was the ringing in my ears. Oh, and my father asking what the noise was. I don’t think he believed my falsehood but he saw I wasn’t harmed so he let it lie.

Good morning. Happy Monday!

DASN’T LETZ GO!!!!

It’s hard to believe it’s only been a week since the July 4th celebration (celebrated here by buying a generator). I got the generator set up started yesterday and ran it for 5 min. Things seem good. I didn’t realize I’d gotten electric start. One bell/whistle I would have foregone if there had been more options.

The rain has stopped for the moment. We still have drought conditions. There’s some rain guessed for next week, but this week I’ll be watering the grass a lot.

I managed Wordle in 4 today.

Happy Monday...

Did the House on the Rock over the weekend. Took a long route down into Iowa and back up into Wisconsin to get down there.... then cut up through Wisconsin and over to get home. Beautiful countryside to be taking back roads on.

The House was something else though... One of those “map of the human mind” kind of things.

Patchwork of high overcast and toasty today. Kinda muggy. Got a few raindrops on the windshield driving to work this morning. Prognosticators say hotter the next few days.

Four’s ‘meh’ but all in the green seems worthy of fanfare.

Happy Tiw’s Day!

It’s Cub Scout Day Camp week for me, Frank, and Kathleen. Super disorganized this year: lifeguards were saying nobody checked their credentials.

I mean, I know they’re real lifeguards, because I’ve known them all since they were 12 or so, but I don’t know the camp is going to pass inspection if nobody has credentials on file. I turned in my Rangemaster certificate because I always do, but nobody asked for it.
