No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
Weather. Check.
Avoided the mobs Saturday. Just as well; fog over the Bay was so low that S.F. fireworks were obscured by it. There was flashing and flickering and color, but not a good view.
Glad I chose other activities.
Spent awhile Friday afternoon installing new flag brackets on my house.
This stamped steel style last year literally let my flags droop; came home and found them starting to bend down.
Bought a pair of these type:

I dispensed with the wimpy anchor hardware that came with the brackets, and screwed them to my brick walls with white 2-1/4” long, flanged hex head, fully-threaded masonry screws. Accounting for the thickness of the brackets, that’s 4 screws for each bracket, with over 1-3/4” of thread engagement each.
My flags are 4x6, not 3x5, and they’re heavier nylon and fully embroidered, so they absolutely needed these stronger mount points.
I put out both my U.S. and my “Appeal To Heaven” flags, then parked my ‘63 Impala diagonally in the driveway between them, ‘cuz ‘MURICA! Got a lotta thumbs up over the deco.
Well... it hadda be one or the other, and — wouldn’t ya know — I chose the other first.

We had an “Appeal To Heaven” flag that got shredded by the wind... I guess that it wasn’t very well made... did you get yours from an online source?

Good morning. Happy Twosday.
It’s cloudy and misty out but the rain inches guesser app I have thinks we’ll only get .01” so I watered the grass anyway.
I think we’re keeping this generator. We’re considering getting a quote to put an external hookup on the house instead of running cords. A neighbor has one. Maybe he can recommend someone.

I DO have 3x5 flags, not 4x6, but they are these heavy-weight nylon, with the designs double embroidered on them.
Very sturdy, but also too much for the typical stamped steel 3-screw flag bracket to handle.
Foggy, and damp over the ridge line this morning.
There’s not active A/C running early in the day to dry out the air in the building, so it’s kinda muggy in the office at the moment. BLEAH.

Made it to work.
“The Light” on my dashboard came on while driving in, today.
Checking after arrival, I found that “The Code” has returned, which in itself is a mere nuisance, but there are unhappy smells emanating from under the hood, and a sheen of oil on the frame aft of the engine. Internal oil level checks OK, so no imminent disaster, but there’s very evident leakage, so the UNGH is now in play.
Time to activate my backup car, I guess.
