No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
👍
w00t!
Close….. but no 🚬
Got it that time!
Yes, everyone got home. I’m on a quest for chicken wings to take to the church’s homeless mission tonight. I thought it would be easier. I’m going to Publix now, and I can have Vlad take them over because his dad and I have choir tonight.
It’s cold and damp and a little drizzly here. Frank went to his friend’s house; they’ll bring him home sometime tomorrow.
I would love to have some wings, but I don’t know where to get them in single-serving size. Maybe Ernie’s Quik-Mart. I love them with ranch dressing. Did you ever find them for the homeless mission?
I finally got the gifts for my neighbors delivered. There were only three, as I don’t know a lot of the residents here, but I didn’t want to mess with them before Christmas. Nobody seemed to mind that they were late, but, I mean, who would, when the gifts won’t put any weight on you like the ones I got from them!
I just gave everyone a card and a small doily. The biggest went to Bethany, and she was suitably impressed and grateful. Then one to Linda and one to Kory. Kory’s was as much a thank you as a Christmas gift, as I didn’t thank her for sharing the Thanksgiving feast with me.
And I forgot to go see Jim today! ARGH! I’d better do that tomorrow! I’ve got the slows!
Last but not least, the Other Folks touched down in Little Rock about 30 minutes ago. And he’s glad to be home.
I don’t like wings, so I told the hot-foods clerk at Publix to give whatever kind she had ready. James drove them over to the old church building.
We had choir practice at the house and got a lot done.
I’m glad your family members got home safely!
That’s funny!!
Good morning. I hope you slept well after your choir practice.
I slept too well. Woke up at 0200, then at 0450, then 15 minutes ago. Making up for night-before-last, I guess, when I had a hard time falling asleep.
I have no plans today. Which is just as well, because I don’t want to make myself too tired to get up in the morning. It’s our last day of getting up for the year for 0900 services, as we start at 1030 next week.
One would never know I did the floors a few days ago. *sigh* I don’t want to do them again, but I may have to. How do they get so dirty with just me here??
We’ve got 31° right now, with a high expected of 53 and overcast skies. The same figures have been staring at me since mid-October; not even any snow on Pine Mountain, this year. Maybe we’ll get some in the next two months. :o])
I stayed up too late. 50s and gloomy here, but not quite raining. Maybe I’ll pull myself together and go up to Sally’s house with some things they left here on Christmas.
It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow.
Wings, I think, are like mushrooms — an acquired taste. If they are the right mildness, I like them. But I don’t like anything too spicy. So if I try one brand and they’re too hot, I won’t buy that brand again.
In view of the fact the FS says he doesn’t like to fly, he does a lot of it, but he’s not himself when he’s anticipating the upcoming flight(s). Cranky and out of sorts with everyone.
Give that sweet baby a hug from me!
And tell Sally and (why-can’t-I-remember-his-name) that they do good work!
We need rain so badly, but then, that’s why we’re called the High Desert.
I want to take the car to get it washed but I’m afraid it will rain just enough to make little mud clusters on the car again.
Dallas.
I took Sally a cricket for the anole she rescued from the black cat.
The baby was awake and socializing, which was fun.
If that isn’t almost as cute as your granddbaby, I don’t know what is!
Good morning. I hope you slept well, after your baby hugs, yesterday. (Thanks for reminding me of the name. I think I have it anchored, now.)
I woke up just before 0500 but just couldn’t get up. I felt like Calvin and his fight with the blankets on a school morning. It’s the last Sunday at 0900, so maybe the sound will be working today, and I’ll be able to actually hear the announcements.
Other than listening/watching on Zoom, I have nothing planned.
My dyslexia is running rampant today, though. I hate when every other word is underlined in red. It makes me feel like I’m back in Creative Writing class.
It will drop to a couple of degrees lower today to 35 and then get up to 63°. At least it will be sunny for a change.
Chip slept in my chair last night but he is off his feed again. He eats about one day in three.
We’re about to have severe thunderstorms, according to the weatherguessers. “They say” it will pass before we go to church.
James has gone to work at the Town Hall, where he will be safe from Weather.
What does James do at the Town Hall?
I hate thunderstorms. But you’ve heard it all before so I won’t bore you with a rehash!
Needless to say, I don’t envy you!
The shower has been had, and if my hair wasn’t so wet, I’d think seriously about having a nap!
I dreamed of elephants and rainstorms this morning and last night. Both are good omens, especially the elephants!
I see where the Christmas special of Death in Paradise is going to introduce its new Detective Inspector who comes to investigate the death of two Santas. What fun, to see Andre from the “Mama Beth” episode take on a totally different role!
Very cleaver, Nully.
We watched the DIP episode the other night. I think you will like it.
James was at the Town Hall because some group was having a meeting there. The weathers turn out not to be too bad.
I like all the DiP episodes, and every season! In fact, I started with the first season not too long ago, so I can just flow right into the Christmas episode. I started a little later than I wanted to, but I got side-tracked, which is my favorite go-to excuse.
Ah. So James was the baby-sitter for the meeting! Good for James!
I managed to watch the services this morning, complete with sound, until just the very end, when the closing prayer was being said. Then the sound got really wonky and shortly after, the video stopped for a total of about 30 seconds, and then all we got was, “Amen.” So it wasn’t as bad as the last time I tried to watch.
Last week, those of us who occasionally stay home and watch were “admonished” to text one of the men to let them know while its happening. We have a tendency to be “reverent” during the meetings, even though we aren’t there, so texting at the time is something we don’t think about. I guess they prefer it to blowing up their phones with texts the minute the meeting closes.
We were promised sun, but that’s not what we got. We got some overcast. Ugh. At least it’s not rainy, like in Dogpatch.
