Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

My word list showed this one had already won. I finally guessed it because nothing else would work. I even used a throw-away word on guess 4.

2 more runs gives me 15 for our last Over of this match.

I think a tie score is fitting!

Yes, a tie is very fitting!

Hmm, I don't see it in the rockpapershotgun list...

Good morning. Happy Monday!

We’ve maintained our cool mornings and warm afternoons. It looks like this will continue for a bit longer.

Our landscaping is supposed to happen this month. Hopefully we’ll hear from them soon.

Today’s Wordle gave me a really odd start practicing up for the round of golf.

Good Monday Morning!

We’ve pretty much settled into a seasonal pattern for the late spring, early summer... highs around 90° and lows around 70°, mix of sun and clouds most days...

Pretty so-so Wordle today, I got lucky yesterday with 4 yellow squares on row two... it forced me into getting it on row three, though I was surprised that it was a word that they used...

Happy Monday. Rained most of yesterday. Saturday’s client server room rebuild went as expected for a change. Was scheduled for 8 hours and completed it in 6...

I have a Niece graduating HS later today. We’ll see if the weather holds as it’s being held outside at the football stadium.

Have fun at the graduation. I agree it’s best not to graduate in the rain.

No one has even said, “As fun as a graduation ceremony for 900+ kids where you only care about 1 of them...” and meant it without sarcasm or irony...

Afternoon, epople. Monday here. I had a doctor appointment this morning. They said I seemed fine, filled out my medical form for Boy Scout camp staff, and took my blood. I assume they’ll fine nothing newly unusual in my blood.

Rained again. I guess Frank will never mow the back yard. It will crawl in the upstairs windows and strangle us in our beds.

I’m glad things went well. I can’t imagine how I would manage if they took my blood. Usually they only take a sample. Hopefully they’ll give it back before you need it.

I think the grass will take out the lawnmower first. Darks will probably know.

[singing] Monday, Monday...

Getting toastier out West of The Rockies. Summer is heating up. Kids are outta school after tomorrow.

Consider: The Office as Respite...

Took a long drive Saturday; over 200 miles. Dropped over to the coast to make sure my ocean is still there; a constant sea in a sea of change.

Ironic.

Just ventilated my psyche out there in the scenery. The ocean side of the Marin Headlands is twisty and gorgeous. Then the highway runs along just above the waterline on the inland side of Bolinas Lagoon and into coastal forest and vales... VERY tempting to just keep going on and on north; this portion of the California coastline is just stunning. I was quite tempted to just park on an overlook and stay until the Sun had quenched itself in the waters of the distant horizon. Instead, I turned inland and made my way back home through the Sonoma Wine Country with its rolling hills carpeted with lush vineyards and stately wineries.

Scenic roads are an amazing form of therapy, and even with gas tickling $6/ga it’s still cheaper than a half hour with an office professional.

___

Concur with the Wordle assessment: an odd start with a couple too many finishing options...
