Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

51st floor of the IDS tower in downtown Minneapolis... Not a bad view from up here. Parking is still the Devil’s own crotch sweat though.

One of the nice things about tall buildings is how they let you forget the part of the city you had to traverse to get to a higher floor.

I parked in a ramp 3 blocks away. Passed 2 alleyways... both of which smelled like old pot smoke and urine.

It wasn’t quite so bad when I visited Kraft back in the - whenever it was - mid 00s I think.

It's still there and you can't smell the hobos from the 51st floor.

This is looking South-ish from the top floor of the IDS building.

Nice view.

I remember once being on one of the upper floors of the new World Trade Center One and seeing clouds roll over midtown Manhattan. It was pretty cool (although it dumped a lot of rain on the island).

Interesting that they have one in each direction... do you have a preference for which one may go in to effect?

I could go either way. I’m a morning person, so I like more morning light when I can get it. But I see the value of evening light. Having it get dark at 1600 hours during standard time is pretty bad.

I’d just get up at sunrise and go to bed at sunset but they won’t let you do that.

Of course, that would be a total fail at the poles. 😁

Windows were a bit dirty. I wasn’t about to go outside and clean them for a better picture... :-)

I had another client that had an office one floor down. They almost never use it.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

Kitteh says, “I’ve heard that one before!”

Cool temps are still holding sway here. The guess is that we’ll almost hit 70 today but rain this afternoon will bring the highs down again. It really doesn’t feel like mid-May.

Yesterday we spent over 30 minutes discussing how to have a form filled out automatically when someone submits a request to IT for work to be done. But it’s a form and result we never use. I couldn’t convince anyone to just let it go because it exists, so we must get it right. (grumble).

I got 1 run today making my score 4 for the Over. Another sea of green.

Good Mittwoch Morning!

Even though it is a bit annoying on Tuesday morning to head out for shopping must of the day, just when the week is getting going, I enjoy waking up on Wednesday knowing that I am done going anywhere for the rest of the week...

Was a super toughie for me today...
