Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell
Not The Bee ^ | November 26, 2024 | Staff

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Difficult word today, it seems. It’s cloudy and chilly here, might rain later.

Happy Monday. Bright and Sunny, but cold. 35 when I left my house this AM. Supposedly going to 61. This is a relatively COLD May for up here. We’ve normally seen a solid spate of 70+ days by now and we just haven’t.

Mother’s day was eventful. Saturday, Mom was out botanical shopping with two of the Granddaughters... started having chest pains. Took her to the ER. Early indicators were heart attack. So, naturally... we were concerned.

Did the usual MRI/CAT/Angiogram on her and found... nothing. No blockages, no signs of heart muscle damage. Just elevated asymetrical blood pressure, left-side weakness and jaw pain, etc... They are calling is a “stress induced heart event”, but not an actual heart attack. She should be home today.

The vet visit went well, thanks, as did the long drive there and back. The Princess was glad to finally get something to eat.

The story reminds me of lots of memes I have seen over the years that show a poster with a picture of a cat saying, “This cat is a liar. He’s telling you he is mistreated but he is very well fed” and so forth.

Do the grandkids normally induce that kind of stress?

I’m glad it wasn’t worse than that.

When I walked into the living room this morning that’s the look I got from Darth-Ann and Maris Crane as they lolled on their puffy pillows.

Good morning. Happy Twosday!

It’s nice not to be excluded, Betty.

We’ve been having “crisp” weather here, also. But we have morning light to go with it, so that’s nice. I almost don’t need the flashlight to walk The Princess in the morning. We’re not quite there yet, though.

I don’t know if I mentioned that The Princess had a very positive check-up with the vet. We just need to see the results of her blood test, particularly the liver function. I don’t know why it takes so long here for that to come back. It used to be available for us the next morning in the old place. But we should know before the end of the week if we can start cutting back on her steroid.

I managed to get 3 runs in today’s Wordle, which gives me 3 runs for the Over.

That’s good news for the Princess and you!

It’s chilly here this morning. The young mockingbirds are out of the nest and shrieking all around the yard.

Guten Morgen,

And it is written all over Betty’s face!

I realized the past few days when it has actually started out sunny, that sunrise has been happening a lot earlier than it seemed when we went for weeks starting each day with heavy cloud cover...

I saw that PA has 2 state resolutions in the works. One to make Standard Time permanent, and one to make Daylight Savings Time permanent. If they pass the first one it can go into effect immediately (or at the next clock change) since Federal law allows states to opt out of Daylight Savings Time. If they pass the second, it can only take effect if Congress makes a law change. Apparently several states have that law already on their books and are just waiting for Congress to give the green light.

I wonder what would happen if some state just decided to order all clocks changed an who cares what Congress says. I wonder what SCOTUS would say, if anyone pushed it that far.

Maybe I need to write my state rep.
