Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

“Minds think alike”...

I worry every day that there are fewer and fewer that qualify as “Great”...

Good morning. Happy Twosday!

I need a box like that.

We have sunshine and relatively cool temps. The guesses are for a very moderate week.

We talked to another landscaper yesterday. He says his initial quote will take a week and a half to come in. He wasn’t fast to get back to us so he may lose out on lack of speed.

I will be going in to NYC tomorrow to meet our freshly minted CIO and attend an important leadership meeting. The CIO started yesterday but has been in orientation. Tomorrow is the big day. It’s going to be a long one for me. I have to get up around 3:30 am and won’t get home until after 9:30 pm.

It’s a living.

I managed to get 2 more runs in today. That makes 4 for this Over.

Ouch! Is that driving, mass transit, or a combo?

I drive to Jersey City, about 3.5 hours but maybe more in morning traffic so I’m leaving early.

The parking lot I use is a 2 block walk from a PATH train to lower Manhattan, which puts me another 2 block walk from where I’ll be meeting.

I looked at taking Amtrak but it puts me at Penn Station at 8:30 and my meeting starts at 9. I have to take the subway from Penn Station and can’t be sure I’d get there on time. And the hours are just as bad.

OK, this is a tad political but it's one of my all-time favorite jokes from Airplane.

Good Midweek Morning!

That looks like a really nice bag!

Planning ahead pays off... a couple of years ago I said to Mrs. zz that we should get a backup in place for the day that the Keurig gives out... most likely at a very inopportune time... Well today it brewed my first cup, but failed when it was time to brew one for Mrs. zz...

It took a few minutes to find where we stored the backup unit (on the floor in the pantry) but once we located it we were back in business... This little one cup reservoir unit will go back into backup mode when the replacement unit arrives on Friday (Amazon)...

Slow and painful...

Well, here it is Wednesday again. On a client site clear on the opposite side of everything from where I live. Would have been nice to ride the bike, but high winds and rain are forecast. showing up at a client looking like a bedraggled rat doesn’t sit well with my sense of personal vanity.

If you turn one of the limbs in the wrong direction, the whole thing just goes Sploid! all over the place.

Tabby with grocery sack.
A classic duo.
Hi-jinks inevitable.

My favorite thing was always when the cat, exploring inside the sack would push against the bottom and the sack would suddenly stand up, with the feline now at the bottom.

The sudden absence of a roof, and the vanishing of “the way I came in” always combined to elicit a humorous reaction.
