Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

My theory is that humanity migrated north when climates were more temperate. But once the climate changed our stubbornness kicked in and we didn’t migrate back south.

“This is my home, and no cold weather is going to drive me out of it!”

We’re kind of stupid that way.

The Advent Kittah might have skipped your house but Christmas Cat will always arrive. Especially if you leave breakables around.

“Why do I live where the air hurts my face?” as the saying goes.

Because very cold winters reduce the number of annoying things you have to deal with.

The ones that fly, the ones that crawl and especially the ones that walk on two legs. :)

Yes, they do tend to cause breakables to be broken.

LOL! That’s exactly what it looks like - quicksand.

Good morning. Happy Friday!

That’s an impressive photo. I wouldn’t want quicksand in my home.

We survived whatever the weather warning was yesterday. It’s just normal, gloomy and cold weather today.

I got a bill from the internet company I’m trying to cancel. I guess more time on the phone is in order for me this morning.

Wordle was a bit of a slog this morning.

To: ArGee; All

Good Friday Morning!

Waking up to some pretty dense fog owing to the warmer air pushing up from the South overrunning the cooler air in place... hopefully we see the sun this afternoon...

Thought that I had it in two... but no...

Wordle 1,637 3/6*

🟩🟩⬛⬛⬛
🟩🟩🟩🟩⬛
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

I suppose that my row two guess was a less commonly used word, but it is the first thing that popped into my head after seeing row one...

I find I often have strange first try guesses. When I get all but 1 out of 5 right I think of another word and wonder why I didn’t think of it first.

I guess if 3 F is all that’s there you should take it.

I remember in an economics class the professor asked if we would drive across town to save $5 on a $30 clock radio (I was in school a long time ago). Lots of hands went up. Then he asked if we would drive across town to save $5 on a $10,000 car. A few hands went up.

He said, “Why not? It’s the same $5”

So Quicksand is a problem inside of homes.

My mother assured me it was not.

Ha!

My wife gave me a funny look this morning when I got out my hiking staff and started tapping the floor in front of me as I walked around.

Sometimes I will think of two possible guesses... sometimes the one I choose turns out to be right, but equally often I choose the wrong one! 🙃

I was at a company that was interviewing the Project Manager for IBM’s Deep Blue - the computer system that played Jeopardy and was the precursor to Watson.

He talked about how they created an algorithm that would farm the question out to several different “engines”. Each engine would try to solve the question from a particular point of view and return its answer with a confidence level within some number of microseconds. The main process would then buzz in with the highest confidence answer.

I think my brain does that but without the confidence rating.
