Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I count on a daily nap (45-75 minutes) each day to function... if I don’t get a nap in, for whatever reason, I am falling asleep by 8:30pm... hopefully you make it to Wednesday, just a few days away!

I often take a nap in the afternoon, too. Even an hour keeps me from falling asleep while driving later in the day. Sometimes I nap in the car while Kathleen is at an activity.

“and the potter didn’t want Frank”

Poor Frank.
The phycological trauma of not even being swappable for a Catawba blacksnake bowl is just immense.

A frog sculpture sounds nice.

What an insult that he didn’t want Frank. I would think Frank could do enough work to equal $1,000 in short order.

Good morning. Happy Monday.

Our refrigerator is supposed to come today between 11:30 and 3:30. I’ll have to find time to go get ice once the drivers notify us.

Amazon sometimes ships via USPS. The USPS won’t drop packages here. We know we left instructions not to drop packages here while we were gone, but they know we’re back. Mrs. ArGee is going to talk with them this morning. They’re all very nice, but their systems and regulations seem to get in the way.

I got an iPhone yesteray. I have some things to learn.

And, on top of everything else, the heater stopped heating yesterday evening. The status lights were good so I cycled the power and all is well now, but we have to have someone look at it since we don’t know what happened. I guess we expect stuff like that with a 25 year old house.

On to owrk. Here’s Wordle.

Good Monday Morning!

Glad that I took the minor freeze protections before coming in last evening, got a few degrees cold than foreguessed...

At least we are out of our ‘no sun’ phase here...

So-so Wordle, could have been worse...

Monday Morning commute in to Minneapolis with a bit of ice on the roads and just a bit of snow flurries... just enough to make a 40 minute trip in to an hour and a half trip.

*sigh*

Boring day ahead. Loading laptops up for a law firm. Not exactly “giant brain” work.

I’m a big fan of naps. Mrs. ArGee thinks they are a sign of a character flaw. I fail to see the benefits of a manic lifestyle because I wake up each morning with a list longer than I can possibly accomplish.

And then there’s the Internet.

I’ve been on DSL for a while. This area finally got Fiber and my ISP has been pushing me to upgrade. But we haven’t been here and the house was a mess so we were waiting.

Saturday, service got spotty. Today I contacted them for a fix. They said they could convert me to fiber on the 18th. So I asked when they could fix my copper. They said no later than January 7.

So I’m off to Verizon for 5G home internet.

Congrats on the iPhone. Good luck with the learning curve.

Hope the refrigerator arrival goes smoothly.

Working to clear extraneous things out of my garage to make room for my son’s Birthday/Christmas present I’ve rediscovered a number of used kitchen things I’d hoped to equip one or more of my kids with: coffee maker, Farberware cookware, a couple of sets of dinnerware, several Pyrex baking and serving pieces with lids, some of which are made of the OG borosilicate glass (they’re clear at the edges, while the modern soda-lime glass fakes look blue-green); a whole set of plastic microwave cookware, a 1980’s vintage 2-speed food processor, several smaller plastic cutting boards, a green marble charcuterie board maybe 13x15... just on and on. I found an insulated “12 cup” stainless steel coffee pot that I put to the test. After sitting overnight on the counter, the hot water I put in it on Friday night was still steaming hot over 8 hours later on Saturday morning, so I’m thinking that might be a “keeper.”

Property Tax is due in 3 days. UNGH. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” with a more Grinch-y tone.

I did manage to hit the cyber Monday sale at my usual tire shop, and saved over $100 on new meat for my war wagon.

Aaaannd I found two teacup and saucer sets to expand a limited edition collectible Poppy Angeloff tea set I won at a silent auction for a charity. I have the doggie teapot, three cups featuring different cats, and one featuring a dog, but there are six different designs of each. So, now I’ll have three with cats, and three with dogs, and maybe decide how gung ho I am about filling out the other three of each.

That’ll probably be the extent of my Christmas. I’m equipped, now, to host tea, though I doubt I’ll do a “high tea”; that would be a stretch.

Today’s Wordle ran another multi-option pattern. I was going at a concerning burn rate when I finally picked the right combo.

The fridge is in and cooling. The guys got it working but didn’t remove all the inside tape. They also left their gloves. I called them back and let them know.

I didn’t hear my phone ring before they came, though. Lucky I figured out that was their number.

That tape and the protective plastic film on the outsides of the doors is the bear. You get something in stainless steel, and that film is on those panels on the assembly line; it extends into the cracks and is very difficult to remove entirely. I have a couple places on my refrigerator where there remain traces of blue plastic tucked tightly into panel seams around the doors.
