Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

It does make me wonder what else we say that she understands.

We wonder that a lot with Arthur...

Finding people to do work around here is difficult.

Maybe it is the time when you expand your DIY world... amazing amount of help available on YouTube these days...

It’s tough to do things well when I can cut a curve with a flat hand saw. My hand-eye coordination is pretty poor. But, you do what you have to do.

I know the feeling. How can we count on Congress to do difficult things when they can’t do such a simple thing as eradicate the bi-annual time change.

I’m suffering through a workplace violence training. It needs to be refreshed. Everyone in the photos is wearing a mask.

My hands aren’t that old.

But they are old enough to remember OFST before it became a posting place for strange surveys.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

Why iz you all sidewayz?

This place is dry. I had started trying to lotion my face back in NY and was continuing that here, but I’ve developed a bit of a rash. I’m going to stop the lotion to see if that was the cause, but my face may crack off since it’s so dry here.

The Princess is getting more used to the flooring here. That’s good and bad news - like a toddler learning to walk.

Another so-so Wordle outing. This was a case of choosing a less common word and then, when I saw I missed by one letter, going “duh” on the more common word.

Bought a jetski at auction yesterday... $115. Found a trailer, $100. Everything needs work, but nothing I can’t fix over the Winter... Still feels a little surreal.

Any-who...

Any day that isn’t an X/6 is a good day.

Good luck with the trek into town.

I can almost envision loading up the buckboard and hitching the mules to the front.

I loved to water-ski as a lad. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a jet ski.

If I bought a toy for myself it would be an ultralight aircraft. But Mrs. ArGee is a little soft on the idea of me flying (soft being an understatement). I think she wants me to die of old age or something, an idea I don’t love.

It’s a 2000 Yamaha WaveRunner 1200. Carburated, but they are Mikuni’s so dead stupid simple to work on and rebuild. I’ll probably have to rebuild the motor, but that’s not difficult either and can be done in a weekend. Might upgrade the impeller on it to push the top speed up a bit. 58 MPH up to maybe closer to 70.

Trailer needs new tires and a new hitch... but that’s 15 minutes worth of work. Already has tilt-on loading and a new hand-crank winch on it with a new cable.

All-in-all... Maybe a week or two worth of farting around in my garage and I could probably flip the whole rig for about $2000. Don’t want to though... I love a good jetski...

It’s a bit removed from that.... but the concept is pretty much the same, travel in once each week, hit all the stores to pickup what is needed for the foreseeable future...

Takes a bit of planning and being organized, but saves a lot of fuel and time.... I essentially pump 6 gallons of gas on my weekly fill-up.... rarely varies from that...

Good morning. I have a cold. Kathleen needs to go to the orthodontist because her aligners are cracking. My nose feels like a sack of wet cement. I’ll have to pick Frank up from school, and I’m really annoyed with him.

GAH.

So, loading up a Silverado instead of a buckboard?

My brother always asked why engines were rated in horsepower. No matter how many horses you hitch to the front of a wagon it’s never going to go faster than around 30 mph.

But I guess not all cowboys are engineers.
