Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I think most of their western fires are in such remote places that there’s not much they can do.

We got a carbon copy of yesterday for today’s weather. Feels like they’re cranking them out using a template...

Nice that your next generation will get the privilege of having solid wood furniture. Now you get a veneer over MDF for your finished panels, and the inner body is particle board.

Sorry to hear your trash is being trashy. Big contractor out this way had the Teamsters walk out on them for awhile. It didn’t work out as well as they’d hoped; too many people figured out who was actually to blame.

My only gripes at my place is they don’t include a couple of Large Item pickups, which the other area contractor does, and there’s some State-level nonsense I’m being billed for where they’re required to offer kitchen compostable waste pickup. I have this two-gallon lidded container with a handle that I’ve never used, nor likely ever will. but the damnable politicians have figured out they can fake the “green” participation numbers if they bypass the consumers, and, instead of letting consumers opt in at-will, require the garbage collection company to foist the service upon everyone.

Oh well. Hell’s hot enough in every corner, or so I hear.

...

Got my first reveals properly sorted but that left me with too many possibilities.

All the green waste stuff is pretty much grift. I’ve been trying to convince Mrs. ArGee to stop obsessing over recycling. And it’s interesting because she’ll tell me how important it is, but not worry about removing the non-recyclable caps from the recyclable bottles before tossing them in the container. If you care, then care. Otherwise let’s stop the show. But that doesn’t get me anywhere.

Good morning. Happy Humph Day!

If you visit American city
You will find it very pretty
Just two things of which you must beware
Don’t drink the water and don’t breathe the air!

More mild summer weather on tap here. It was just over 60 fs walking The Princess and will get to just over 80 fs during the day.

Young ArGee went to her cousin’s wedding last weekend. She learned that her cousin’s brother, a musician, is living at home and playing the same gigs for the past several years. None of those gigs give him enough to move out. B-I-L is frustrated but not doing anything.

I guess it’s good that the son likes the family enough to be able to stay. I couldn’t wait to get out on my own.

Another good Wordle day.

Almost all recycling collections are full of non-recyclable stuff and just end up in the landfill.

If you can get a hold of this article, let her read it...

https://www.nytimes.com/1996/06/30/magazine/recycling-is-garbage.html

It is by John Tierney and appeared in the NYT Sunday Magazine back in 1996... I probably still have the original magazine in a storage box.

She would never think the same about recycling again...

Is that Envirothon wisdom?

I have heard that is true. Mostly because people who are recycling put in stuff that contaminates the load. Like throwing in un-rinsed plastic or putting colored glass in with the clear.

Yes, we have “How to do recycling correctly” as a Current Environmental Issue every few years. Almost everyone throws in stuff that doesn’t belong.

One reason for that is that many items are marked “recyclable” that are not actually recycled by city collection services. Kinds of paper and plastic are “recyclable” in theory, but in practice, often no facilities will do it because it’s not economical.
