Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell
Not The Bee ^ | November 26, 2024 | Staff

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I’m glad you enjoyed the visit, and it’s probably better that you had only a couple of boys and not a large group.

There are only seven or eight in that entire group (they go by age — these are 12 and 13) but I wouldn’t have had room for more than two or three more. And they all would have been quiet, as that’s how they’re raised.

I’m glad they were here. I see them every Sunday, but mostly all I see is their backs!

I’ll give a “thank you” card to Melvin (the guy) on Sunday, just because I feel the need to let the boys know they made a difference in my Christmas!

Excellent idea. That would be a nice thing for our youth to do. Maybe I’ll bring it up to our youth ministry leaders next year.

Good morning. Happy Friday Eve!

We had rain all day yesterday. Much of the snow has melted and we have some icy ponds instead. The ice is thin, though. It didn’t get very cold last night. It’s going to cool down tomorrow and Saturday with highs in the upper 20s if this guess is correct. THen it’s back to warmer temps with a high of 46 on Tuesday.

The Princess liked all the choices this morning but took a long time to pick one.

Mrs. ArGee spent yesterday afternoon getting her mother’s various wounds looked at. None are infected but she’s on an antibiotic for now, just in case.

Tough Wordle today. I didn’t get any right letters in the wrong places to work with. I just had to brute-force it through. When I typed in the correct word I wasn’t even 100% sure it was a word. I’d already tried some letter combos that weren’t on their word list.

Wordle 1,272 5/6*

I’ve always had the older boys come, (14-16) but they’ve stayed outside and sung a couple of Carols. AND brought cookies! This was a nice change. And a smaller group. The first year I was here, it was the Young Women who came to sing Carols.

It’s always nice to see the youth take such an interest in older people.

Good morning. We had a lot of rain yesterday. One of the nearby streets was closed for a few hours because of flooding. It didn’t reach any houses, just fields that aren’t in crops right now. It cleared up in the late afternoon.

We’ve been to church to lead the sing-along for Our Lady of Guadalupe already, and we have another big do tonight. Meanwhile, there are various school-type and Scouty things to do.

That’s cute!

Good morning. I hope you had a good night!

Today is pill sorting day and maybe I’ll try to file a few things. I’m sick of paperwork! But I have two monstrous piles that need to be sorted and put into appropriate file folders.

It’s 26° again this morning. It seems the heater in here has gone non-stop since mid-October. But that’s OK. The rest of the house stays fairly warm because of it, though the bedroom was a chilly 70° when I shut the light out. The back storm door makes a world of difference.

We need rain, but all it does is turn the dust on the cars into mud spots. That’s disgusting!

I’ve never seen it so dusty here, but there is a lot of building going on in Hurricane, so. They’ll probably do what George did about 40 years ago. They built so many condos, they couldn’t sell them, so they ended up renting them out to students at the local college. I suspect that will be going on here, too.

I’m looking forward to seeing the ENT guy next month. Maybe by this time next year, I’ll be able to sing. Maybe.

I’m having trouble finding a suitable starting word, and I forgot what I was using before. So it takes me a while to get going.

-8 this morning. My truck has decided that the fuel filler neck was going to pick today to have an issue. I may also have a small crack in a radiator hose as there was some evidence of a leak on the passenger side of the engine comparment where the over-flow tank it. Hasn’t been over heating though and the fluid level is still ok...

I also have a migraine this morning. Medicated and on a client site... ONly a half day and then I can head back home... Meds are keeping the worst of it at bay, but it still leaves you feeling... icky.

Almost missed that one...
