Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Good luck with the lawn. We have random native greenery, dry in the front and soggy in the back.

Second place in a state-wide competition is nothing to sneeze at. Congratulations to Frank’s and Kathleen’s teams.

Good morning. Happy Monday!

Happy Cinco da Mayo. I hope everyone enjoyed Star Wars day yesterday.

We are in a rainy period. It looks like the rain may pause for the graveside service but only if the foreguessers are a lot better than they have been recently.

The “house walkthrough” took almost 4 hours last Saturday. The sisters have supplied long lists of things they want. One of the sisters also supplied a list of recommended estate sale companies and Mrs. ArGee said, “She thinks there will be anything left after her list?” At least having family take everything would make that part easy.

Here on the 14th hole I let fly a drive that went almost 350 yards, well into the first cutout. My second drive actually landed on the green about 10 feet from the hole. I was not certain the ball had enough oomph to make it to the cup, but it surprised me by pausing at the rim, then dropping in. I’m sure it had absolutely nothing to do with the shaman who was sitting in the shade of those trees to the right of the green chanting something.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Goign to be a beutiful week weather wise... at least so far. SUnny and 70’s...

Does not translate to the Wordle Golf though. Wiffed the tee shot, #3 wood did almost nothing... and I probably should have gone with the #3 iron instead of the #5... But I somehow made it to the green and with a loooooong putt, sank the shot.

Good Monday Morning!

After the hail storm blew threw Friday in the late afternoon, we were left with beautiful crisp weather, Saturday & Sunday were two of the nicest days that we have had around here for quite some time... cool dry air, windows open all around...

On the 14th hole I really flubbed the tee shot getting way under it but it landed with a decent lie, I just went with the driver from the fairway for the second shot... it went unbelievably far and somehow came to rest on the tiny green... it left me with a challenging, but make-able putt for the Eagle 3...

My father wanted to go into forestry, and do something with Land Management. He ended up working for the phone company. But we always had the western Garden Book, and Sunset magazine around the house to stimulate our sense of what might be possible. Dad did pretty well with our patch of SoCal hillside; we had a nice variety of thoughtfully-placed plants, and we were the only ones I’ve ever known who had a thriving dichondra lawn.

As for me...?

Let’s just say that horticultural abilities aren’t genetic.

Oh, that weather is THE BEST.

LOVE it when it’s just temperate and you can open up the whole house, and fill it with fresh air and bird song.

Don’t need either the heater or the A/C.

Every year I hope that spring will endure as long as possible so I can shut off the heater,
and keep pushing out the date when I fire up the A/C for the first time.

My big problem is many of the ones that really make me laugh are too political for the UT. Who would have thought that the best Comedy in 2025 would come from government rather than things like sit-coms or stand-up comedians?

Yes, I agree, it is wonderful...

Our problem is most often less about the temperature, but the humidity level... we often have a lot of days and nights where the temperature is in the right range for open windows, but it is so bloody humid out there that we don’t want that air in the house...

Rather than describe my play on this hole, I provide this portion of “The Anvil Chorus” from Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” by which you may accurately visualize it:

FINALLY got to the green, and — like Maxwell Smart: “Missed it by THAT much.”

Bogie.

My backing track for the hike to the 15th tee back at +3...

Good morning. Happy Twosday!

I’m trying to help some friends learn Microsoft Project. I got a Windoze VM running on my Macbook. So far it hasn’t caused the host computer any problems. I would have expected it to spew or something.

Glad to know that kitteh was alive when the box was opened.

Today’s play was very normal. I hit the middle cut-out with a nice lie for the dog-leg to the left. My shot to the green fell just short, which meant the ball rolled back a bit after it hit the rise leading to the green. I shot confidently toward the cup from that point but rolled past almost off the green on the other side. I managed to putt in from there for par.
