Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

More rain Friday but still happy for a nice weekend.

Apparently grabbed the Titlist instead of the Ping on the tee shot. Didn’t get any of the distance I wanted. Risked a #3 wood that dropped me right on the green next to the cup. Tapped it in and on to the next hole on Monday.

If only this were really useful, like winning championships and retiring on the winnings or something. 😁

Still struggling at the 11th tee, I gave a wide berth to the large pit on the left, got too much of it and ended up in the rough to the right of the green; nearly into the brush. Looking for the cup out of the tall grass, I got more green than white and left myself wishing the divot had been my ball as it flew farther; I would’ve had a putt from the edge of the actual green. As it was, after I repaired the crater, I had to chip from a couple feet into the fringe, and that shot came up a foot or so short of par. Once again I take the tap-in to notch a Bogie.

Off, now to the 12th at +3 so far on the round.

Of the 12th tee I found a lie in the fairway biased to the right with about 200 yards still to the pin. A good 3-iron second stroke got me just shy of the green. A chip to the hole looked promising early but the slope of the green drew the shot to the right nearing the cup, leaving me about 3 feet away facing a slight uphill putt, which dropped to give me par on the hole.

Away to the 13th still at 3 over.

It’s green!

Back from nondescript Burlington, NC, where Frank’s team was second (high school) at the state Envirothon, and Kathleen’s team was second for middle school.

We haven’t seen the detailed scores yet, so I don’t know how close Frank was to first, but if they’d won, he would have lifetime bragging rights over Tom and Dan, who both had 2nd place teams.

Maybe next year ...

Things are looking up out here on the treacherous 13th.

I got a very nice, clean drive off the tee that carried over that dinosaur footprint of a bunker to a good lie just below the green, right about where the narrow little neck leads up to the putting surface. From that vantage point, a gentle 9-iron lofted my ball nearly to the flag, and left me with a cinch of a two-footer to hole in for a Birdie; only my second for this round.

So I pick up a stroke and move to the 14th, now, at 2 over.

Yes, the landscapes are greening up all over...

Great job by the kids on the Envirothon efforts! 👏🏼

Kudos to the yute competitors.

I spent a couple of at last constructive hours wrestling with the fuel system on my nondescript mower successfully restoring it to running status so I could address my not-so- nondescript front lawn.

I’d let it be for several months since last summer, and it mostly behaved itself: growing thicker rather than taller. It had availed itself of the warming spring weather to leap up and go to seed, and that, of course, had to be remedied. I got it cut down and mulched it into the turf. I’m hoping the seed will take, and get me a more dense lawn.
