Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

I thought about Chip wanting attention, which is why I went over to his corner. Since he quieted right down, that’s probably what it was.

We’ll see if it happens again. If it does, I’ll chalk it up to progress of sorts!

I love pinenuts. I have since I was growing up, as there were so many people who hunted for them in our town. I never knew where the “secret stash” of piñon trees was, but there seemed to be several stands of them in the surrounding canyons. We stopped at Lin’s where I got some cheese curds, and saw sign for pinenuts ($15 a POUND!) and Carissa said her husband has a stash of them. :o])

So she’ll drop some off in the next day or two.

Good morning. Happy Friday!

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving was just last week.

When all was said and done we probably got about 4 inches of snow between Wednesday night and this morning. It was cold this morning but we have some more moderate temperatures coming next week.

M-I-L seems to be taking longer “power naps” at night. I don’t know if we’ve finally found the right sleep aids or if she’s coming to grips with being alone at night. Mrs. ArGee decided to get a wheelchair because sometimes her mom really has trouble picking up her feet.

I have to find out about some new names on our apartment complex staff list so Mrs. ArGee can get them all “a little something” for Christmas.

Another “par” Wordle day.

Good Friday Morning!

I was pretty much out of pocket since Wednesday afternoon... we got home very late from the TSO show (which was once again excellent this year!) and slept in a bit later than usual... only to see that M-I-L had texted saying that F-I-L was in a steep decline at the care home...

We rushed up there to set with her and see what was going on... spent most of the day just setting, praying, and watching... and giving updates to family members that were unable to get there...

We left at the end of the day with him pretty much in the same declining state as he started the day... So far, no word from M-I-L about any status...

Wordle today was the same as yesterday... thought that I got it in 3, but ended up being 4...

That’s really cute!

Good morning. I hope you had a good night.

I didn’t think my day yesterday was very busy, but I was in a lot of pain for the entire day, and that has always worn me out. So yesterday went. By the time I got to bed, I was exhausted. I slept four hours, woke up for a pain pill and slept another six -and-a-half hours. So yeah. I was worn out yesterday.

Gloriosky. I didn’t set the alarm again for today because I just couldn’t face it. I’m not even going to speculate on what tonight will be like!

Weird... how did it get to be Friday already? Not that this is an unwelcome development.

Have my kids this weekend... Not sure what to do with them. Taking them to see the The Danger Committee on the 21st... but nothing this weekend.

A wheelchair sounds like a good idea for your M-i-L. Let’s hope she’ll use it. And sleeping longer at night is good, even though its just power naps for now.

We have one and sometime one-and-a-half staff members for 24 apartments. It depends on whether Bethany’s husband helps with the big jobs or just sticks to being The Lawn Guy. He does all the bigger jobs like heavy lifting and such, but she’s usually with him on those.

Sorry to hear about your F-i-L.

That’s always so sad to hear about. You must be close to exhaustion. How’s your M-i-L holding up?

You and ArGee are always so close together in your Wordle grids and scores, it’s uncanny!

Movies and popcorn!!!

I mean, you could at pizza to the list, but most kids like to watch movies. And if there is cold and snow, what better way to spend the days than with a movie marathon?

Your Wordle looks pretty good today!

Doing a roast on Saturday and a Stir-fry on Sunday.

For the stir-fry on Sunday, doing grilled shrimp and chicken to put with the fried veggies.

The Wordles I try to do during my morning meeting. It’s a pretty Zen way to make it through a Zoom/Teams meeting and it keeps me awake for the half-hour/hour the meeting lasts...

Starter word.

LOL!

The menu sounds delicious!

Yeah, I get it about the meetings. I always hated them, but we seemed to have speed courses. We spent all day learning one thing on the agenda, but that’s the local gubmint for ya.

I doodled as we had to have our screens for the class. No one knew I wasn’t taking notes and that I’d already figured out the new program. Fun days.

I miss Texas.

I remember when I lived in Houston and my boss said, “In school they’re teaching my son the difference between ‘sit’ and ‘set’. In my house the kid doesn’t stand a chance.

I know a little about what you’re going through, Z, but my F-I-L went through his decline in their home. We were slowly restricting what he could do that would cause trouble, which was making him pretty angry.

Then he had a stroke and lived for less than a week, so that went very quickly.

M-I-L has been sundowning talking about when he’s going to come home and that nobody told her he had died. So I don’t know how much longer she will last. But she’s still in her home with 24x7 care (for now).

Yup, I have been following your saga here in the thread.... it does seem to be very tough for the surviving spouse, especially with these couples that have been married for well over 50 years.....
