No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.
One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.
The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:
Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.
Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.
Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,
It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.
But, she added:
Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.
Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.
The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.
‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'
Not an easy task by any means.
The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"
This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.
It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.
My condolences to you and your wife, and the rest of the family. At least now she is at peace, and didn’t suffer unduly.
Nice Eagle!

Good Morning!
Well hopefully our unseasonably cold overnights are done until next Fall... looking forward to some nice sunny and dry days ahead...
Moving to 15 I had a great shot off the tee... with a generous roll it ended up far enough to have a clear shot at the green around the dogleg left... playing a 3 iron I was able to get it onto the green on two... a fairly tricky putt rolled in for the birdie 3...

Yes. We were all glad she could be in her own bed and go in her sleep.
We had started talking about needing a hospital bed. I’m glad she didn’t have to be put through that.
Currently 20 degrees... Supposedly only making it to 37 this afternoon. Getting tired of these artic bubbles... When this system clears out, we have 60’s on tap for the weekend...
Ugh...
Tried out the Ping on the drive off the tee wit hgood results. My Lefty’s Hook got me around the bend easily and dropped the ball right on the edge of the green. A long putt pulled out a miracle drop to end the hole...

That is pretty much the gold standard for dying, isn't it? What most of us aspire to...
Yeah, I think that we are all hoping these last bubbles of winter are it for the season...
Nice Birdie!

Small wonder I'm a...
When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like Grandpa.
Not screaming like the passengers in his car.
But, seriously, I’m mindful of what Robert Duvall said in “Secondhand Lions” when the kid was telling him he and his brother should be more careful.
“What do you want us to die of? Old age???!!!”
As long as I don’t suffer a long time then I’ll be grateful.
I've heard the the same thing and hope so too.

Yup...
If Frank ate them, they’re probably still in the house ...
How is everyone doing?
Is there a next round of Envirothon now that Frank’s team won?
Is spring springing?
Yes, spring is springing. The next round of Envirothon for both Frank and Kathleen (and the top 7 teams from each of 8 regions of North Carolina) will be May 2-3.
At our meeting today, we rebuilt the garden beds for the youth program participants at the city recreation center where we have some of our meetings. Many hands, it only took a couple of hours.
We also had a speaker who is an archaeologist and forensic anthropologist. She talked about what she does in the land-use department of the state government regarding historically and culturally sensitive artifacts and sites. It was very interesting.
Next week, it’s back to studying.
Studying is a little easier when there’s something practical to be done.
My brother-in-law is a consulting chemical engineer. He helps developers manage runoff ground water, auto repair facilities manage any toxic spills, and such-like. It’s all geared toward minimizing the environmental impact of humans being humans.
Setup, like a bowling pin…
The dilated pupils and the claws in the upholstery do sort of give it away...
