Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Good Midweek Morning!

So now we wait for the rains to begin... the foreguess is for scattered T-storms over the next few days, so I am hoping to get in a bit of mowing in between... I wanted to address it over the weekend but the belt was too far gone for another season, ordered a couple of replacements and a pair of new blades that came late yesterday... get that taken care of this morning so I am ready...

Hole 11 was not kind to me... got on top of the ball severely off the tee and basically rolled it into the broad expanse of shallow sand... overcompensating, I got too far under the ball with my 9 iron and ended up in the deep narrow trap, right next to the wall... using my sand wedge I was able to get it high enough to get past the wall and onto the near fringe...

I lined up for a nice long putt but didn’t read the break well and rolled past the cup about 3 feet off to the right... I sheepishly tapped in for a 5...

Snow... April snow is the worst. It’s heavy, wet, slushy, and not good for anything.

RIP Val Kilmer.. “I’m reminded of the immortal words of Socrates who said, ‘I drank what?’”... - Real Genius

Caught an ok drive off the tee and parked it just to the left/center of the fairway... Stepped up with a 3 driver just for giggles and knocked the absolute snot out of it to drop me dead on the green. Easy putt to close out the hole.

It was flourescent green on the tee and snow white when it landed... Left a green streak through the air...

Morning, all. It’s Elen’s birthday - that’s the daughter that was in the Marine Corps, she’s at Oregon State now. She’s 27.

Frank is at science competition. Our team organizer called me to say he was being “disrespectful,” so I texted him and told him not to be a dumbass.

I thought that was caused by those AI systems helping the people watching on TV track the ball’s path.

Who knew.

Good morning, T-C.

Happy Birthday to Elen (formerly USMC). Hopefully Oregon State won’t turn her too liberal.

It can be extremely difficult for intelligent youts to come across as respectful, especially when faced with lesser intelligences. It’s especially bad when those lesser intelligences are adults. I don’t know if that’s the situation with Frank, but it’s not a bad guess.

For the record, my brilliant older brother’s name is Frank. He was a straight-A student. It was such a pain following his footsteps through high school since I was most decidedly NOT a straight-A student.

It was our team director, Brenda. She’s very conscientious about the Respect Owed Her.

Frank says he stopped being a dumbass. Vlad agreed Frank’s a dumbass, but also, Brenda is annoying. It’s just part of the tradeoffs for having a winning program ...

Frank is keeping their results a secret, except to say that they got 100 in Soil, which I was teaching. What a goober he is.

I was 27 when Bill, my oldest son, was born. He’ll be 31 on Sunday. I sent him a t-shirt from the Charlotte Museum of History. He worked there when he was in college. I’m sure he’ll have the only one in Queens.

A clear blue and brisk day by The Bay. A couple days of scattered showers moved out leaving just a few straggling, puffy, white clouds to grace the bright blue heavens like lazy, overgrown sheep meandering eastward. The wind that herded them was edged, though; the story of a stiff breeze laced with just enough chill to induce drawing one’s coat more tightly to one’s body. We had low 40s last night breaking into only mid-60-ish highs anywhere in view of the water.

I see that you set a high bar on this hole, ArGee. Nicely played.

Par three. Two hundred yards, more or less.

You can play it long to hit the green in one and try to cash in on the chance to beat par, hoping to set up a modest putt to hole in for a Birdie, or even to get the rare Ace — the coveted Hole In One, or overconfidence can leap out to bedevil you and leave you wondering why you ever picked up these silly club thingies in the first place; finding company with novelist Harry Leon Wilson who quipped, “Golf has too much walking to be a good game, and just enough game to spoil a good walk.”

I shot a 5-iron from the 10th tee to ensure safe overflight of the displaced swatch of the Sahara that commands the view ahead. A brisk stroke rewarded me with a good lie that left me a modest chip shot to the green. I made an earnest attempt to hole in on that second stroke, and came agonizingly close, but — no cigar. So, I accepted the tap-in putt for par, bagged my putter, and set off for the 12th tee still holding at 2-under.
