Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Good morning. Happy Monday.

We made it through the weekend without any problems. And I managed to replace M-I-L’s lawnmower battery, thus avoiding the expense of a repair person coming to the house. I didn’t actually mow this weekend, I was just being a good Scout.

We had a rainy weekend, but not a warm one. It’s still cloudy/rainy today but the guess is for a high of 68 fs. I’ll take it.

I managed to get an amazing 2 stroke practice round on Saturday but my luck hasn’t held. Today my 2nd drive got me right up near the water. My chip from there was amazing, missing all that water and rolling directly toward the hole. I thought for sure I was going to make par. But it stopped just shy of the hole and refused to roll in. So I had to settle for a bogey.

Good Monday Morning!

We certainly had a very humid and warm weekend... a few severe T-storm watches went up, but thankfully they avoided our area... supposed to be a bit cooler and a touch drier today...

My weekend practice rounds were both 4s... Hoping for a better showing on the par 3 9th, I saw that staying out of the sand would be the big challenge... Right off the tee my joy of missing the water and landing on the island faded as I saw the ball roll off the apron into the far u-shaped trap... Faced with a difficult chip out because of the steep incline at the edge of the trap, I wanted to really get under it but used a bit too much English and ended up far past the green with a roll almost the other edge...

A more controlled swing with my 9 iron got me on the green in 3, and luckily sank a very challenging putt for the bogey 4.

Hence I close out the front nine with a 2 under 34...

Happy Monday...

Cold this week. Snow for Tues-Wed. Long drive to a client site on Thursday that will unfortunately be in my truck rather than on my trusty iron stead Abby...

Started off the box with a rare slice. Two more strokes with the trusty 3 iron got me on the green for a long, but easy putt.

Ahhh more winter weather is going to keep Abby confined for a bit longer...

The 3 of us are in the bogey club today... maybe HKMk will fare better...

I have her partially torn apart right now. Bags and exhaust removed. Taking the catalytic convertor off and cleaning up the front brakes. The ability to slow down and some times, just sometimes, stop is apparently a good thing.

Slowing down and/or stopping can be helpful at times...

Are you leaving the catalytic converter off, or reinstalling it?

Leaving it off... I put aftermarket pipes on it and had the ECU tuned for it... It’s just a bit of a process getting the CAT out, so I put it off until now. The exhaust note is louder than stock, but not “Harley with straight pipes” obnoxious.

I did it mainly for a few extra horsepower and almost 15 lbs lighter per pipe. The stock exhaust is nortoriously heavy.

Also... putting new bags on too. Viking Bags leather covered hard bags. Lockable and 38L capacity instead of the stock 26L. It doesn’t seem like much, but the new bags are much nicer.

I haven’t been keeping my own scorecard. I’ll wait for the official one.

I supposed that depends on what you’re in. I remember a DryBar comedian stating that he didn’t know of any problem on the road that couldn’t be solved with the liberal application of speed.

But I don’t think he rode a bike.

It can be amazing what you can fit into 12L.

Yes, I plan on putting it out for the front nine as soon as we hear from HKMk... unless I missed it, I need his hole 8 score from Friday as well...

“I need his hole 8 score from Friday as well...”

Oh, my bad... I shot par on the hole and did a complete write-up... I must’ve been called away to a meeting and never hit “Post.” I’ll endeavor to not repeat the oversight today.

Such high hopes, but — alas...

Only 144 yards. “Only.”

I figured a good 7-iron to the left end of the green, and then a couple of putts. So, that’s what I swung off the tee, and — indeed — I did make the green as I had planned. From there, my short game came up short, as I didn’t figure the definition of “a couple” being “three.” The first, admittedly very long putt from one end of the green to the other came up short and wide to the left of the pin, leaving me with a 10ft second attempt that got me everything I wanted except the last two inches to the cup. The ball ran to the pin like it was magnetized, then — as if it had brakes — slowed and stopped short. UNGH.

So, I take a tap-in Bogey here on the 9th, and slouch off to the 10th tee at 1 under par for the front nine.
