Elementary school evacuated after student brought “historic unexploded ordinance” for show and tell

No matter what students bring to future "show and tells" at Orchard Junior School in the Southampton area of England, they will never be able to top this year's spectacle that shut down and evacuated the school.

One bonkers little tyke brought in a bit of vintage "unexploded ordinance" to show his mates.

The school quickly evacuated all the students, called the police, and texted the parents:

Schools are being closed & evacuated - please collect your child from Noadswood field ASAP.

Imagine getting that little note in the middle of the school day.

Laura Holloway, a mother of one of the students was at work at the time. She said,

It was so worrying. Another parent had called saying there were police everywhere. I knew my youngest would have been so scared.

But, she added:

Both schools seemed to deal with it all very well and had the kids lined up and checked off - it must have been very upsetting for everyone involved.

Once the students were out, the police showed up and sent in the bomb squad.

The police's full statement said: ‘We were called at about 1.30pm to a report that a child had brought what may have been a potentially unexploded ordnance to Orchard Junior School.

‘The school was calmly evacuated and a disposal team attended to take the item away to be destroyed as a precaution.'

Not an easy task by any means.

The real question everyone wants to know is "What kind of ‘historic incendiary device' are we talking about here?"

This is England after all. They've been blowing stuff up and getting blown up for centuries.

It could've been anything from a 16th-century mortar to a WWII hand grenade to that morning's beans on toast.

Next week is supposed to be either cold, or snowing... *sigh*...

At least I have plenty of stuff to do inside for a while.

The consensus about Chip is that after such a long absence, he missed me! The four days in CO in August only made him pout for three or four months. Christmas Eve’s absence didn’t seem to bother him. But this time, he realized he depended on me more than his little feral heart wanted to.

I’m content with his progress and don’t intend to try and push him in any way, shape or form.

He always moves in Stealth Mode, and slipped passed me while I was sitting here, listening to an uplifting talk, and began to nibble on more of his food. His appetite has picked up since I got home, which is also a good thing!

So yes, it is good news!

I hope all the things you’re doing with your greenhouse pay off. My dad used to be so sad when he lost any plants. He had not only a green thumb, but two green hands! He could look at a plant, put it in the ground, and say, “Now grow, little plant!” And they did!

We had a marvelous garden every year. I would “help” him plant, as best as my 5-year-old self could, and those were days I still cherish. For a long time, I was his shadow, but! Unlike him and his ability to get everything to grow that he put in the ground, I’m a serial plant killer. Everything I touch dies.

Somebody should have spoken to Phil before last Sunday.

They seem to be progressing well…. Fair amount of small tomatoes and peppers on the vines….

I expect that once I get the temperature from climbing too high on the sunny days, things will settle down in there!

Back from the excursion to the doctor in St George, when they took more blood and told me to get back on baby aspirin and call my cardiologist.

My original appointment with her was for March 9, IIRC, because she would be out of town for various seminars, etc., so I don’t know that it will do much good.

I walked a lot and my legs did well until about the last 5 minutes. Then they began to feel watery. But we were shortly thereafter on the way home, so it didn’t matter. I did good!

The rest of the day is mine!

I’m back! Sally and I visited Fort Pulaski this morning:

https://www.nps.gov/fopu/index.htm

It was super cool with amazing scenery and certainly haunted, and the park ranger was cute as a golden retriever puppy, but Sally and I are both married and I’m old.

Then we drove home about 4-1/2 hours. I missed a turn because we were sorting out Sally’s relationship with her in-laws, so instead of I-77 through Columbia, SC, we wandered through the wilds and saw lots of great old houses, certainly haunted. It was much more enjoyable than the interstate, and at worst, cost us an extra ten minutes.

This has been a full day, and one that I was able to make lots of progress in towards healing.

I can feel the fatigue setting in, so it’s time for me to feed the Chipster, get my own self fed and watered, and head down the hall.

Chip managed to step on one of the remotes during the night last night, when he jumped up onto the sofa to take up his guard station, and I was on the right side of the bed, so I was awakened by the blue screen. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen tonight, as I would really love some unbroken sleep.

Take care, all of you, and have a safe and happy weekend. I’ll be here, keeping vigil!

Welcome home!!

Glad to know you’re both safe and sound! Thanks for the update!

Ft. Pulaski looks like an extremely interesting place to visit, and tomorrow, I’ll take a virtual tour of the place. Thanks for the link.

Meanwhile, I’m off for the night. Text me with any photos tonight. I’m having withdrawal symptoms! ;o]

(REALLY glad you’re home!)

If Chip only knew what a treat is...

Good morning! I hope you slept well, and that you feel rested this morning. I hope the entire trip wasn’t too stressful for you both.

My challenge for today is to change out the printer cartridges before I write to Charlie. Thank goodness it’s a fairly easy job!

Other than those two things, it will be a laid back day, because I’m still planning on going to church tomorrow. I think it’s been three or four weeks since I went, and that’s just too long!

AND! We have a balmy 36° with a high of 56 degrees today.

I lifted up the side of the rug by the back door to keep the cold draft out, and when I came home, Linda had flattened it again. So I’ll put that back in place in a minute, because the back side of my house faces north, and that’s where the wind is coming from.

It blows in right on Chip!

I want summer!

Cartridges have been swapped out, so I can now get on with the day’s doings!

Good Morning!

Hoping that you had a good night’s sleep and are continuing to heal and recover!

Not much going on today... supposed to get up to 85° F with a lot of sunshine so I will need to do what I can to keep the green house from overheating...

Good morning. Not bad, thanks. It was nice to get up at my usual 4:45 knowing the coffee was ready downstairs. I’ve got choir this morning at Asuncion’s house.

It’s 53 with an expected high of 61 here. Might rain. I’ll probably have a nap after choir. The exertion level of this trip was like “campout with strenuous hiking.”

Exhaust fans. Box fans turned toward the outside...

Yup, today’s sun and heat will require an exhaust fan... then back to normal tomorrow....
