At about 1:30 PM on another Friday in November some 61 years ago, Mr. Lew Hitch announced to the biology class, that the President had been shot in Dallas. Within the hour we learned that John F. Kennedy had died from his wounds. I think that for most of us, it was the largest dose of bad news our country had ever experienced.
1200 or so high schoolers took the early dismissal announcement in quiet sadness and made our ways home where other shocking events would be learned over the next three days.
The Nation wept. Our Camelot era was over. November 22, 1963, became a date to be recalled every year for perhaps 25-30 years longer.
We hardly knew where a country called Vietnam was located, but we all were about to figure that out.
The assassination of the President would be the Nation's singular most tragic event until September 11, 2001.
For my generation, November 22, 1963, was the day we all grew up a bit.
Not enough truthful ones, anyway.
Hopefully the Truth and Reconciliation Commission promised by Trump will address this obvious web of lies. RFK in the cabinet should help get it done.
I was too young to notice the event, but my parents talked about that day for years. It was their wedding anniversary.
They got married 11/22/58.
I was in fourth grade. I remember the moment the assassination was announced over the intercom, but I think what is embedded in my memory even more was watching Jack Ruby kill Lee Harvey Oswald live on TV.
The truth is that Bush senior and the cia killed him to protect themselves and stay off the gold standard.
My opinion,of course.
Deep state has been running things for a long time.
Dr. James “Red” Duke (RIP) was in the Trauma residency program at Parkland Hospital that day and was in the ER when they brought Mr. Kennedy in. His Chief Resident pulled rank and moved Dr. Duke out of the theater.
He told me that it was obvious the President was all but dead, so he went over to Governor Connelly to work on him. He said that he and the Governor were great friends from that day on. He always figured that he had drawn the better assignment.
👍
I was in 3rd grade standing at my school locker when I heard.
The Principal came over the loudspeaker and said the President had been shot. I remember thinking, "He's someone important."
I also remember watching Oswald get shot on live TV...
Watch the media today, if the event in Dallas gets any airtime.
The Offical govt story via the Warren Comission was that Oswald was the sole assassin.
That sort of remains the official story. The official govt story sort of changed through other investigations, including the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations. While the contours of a “conspiracy” were introduced, Oswald remains the central character.
Nowadays, we are told by the media that going against the government Offical story on the origin of Covid, the efficacy of the shots, censorship of social media, the attempted “overthrow of the govt” by Trump, climate change, and that Biden was competent all the way up to the debate, is Fake News, a lie, misinformation, and all that. We MUST trust the govt.
And yet, not only, does almost everyone in the planet dispute Warren et al., this disputation is championed by the media. Indeed, for a while there especially after the Oliver Stone movie, the media sought day and night to discredit the Official govt story.
So today, when the media does its best to discredit the Offical govt narrative on JFK while canonizing Fauci, Kamala, and other losers and calling half of America “Nazis,”, you can be forgiven if your already dim view of the media goes down a few notches.
Do I remember? Yes, I was in the assembly room of our high school and the superintendent gave the news. A few years after that I was learning to like jungles.
I recall my father never liked JFK because he was the spoiled womanizing son of a bootlegger and a democrat. This is true, but hindsight tells me he was probably the best democrat prez we’ve had in my lifetime.
Each democrat president after JFK got progressively worse. I guess that’s why they call themselves progressives.
3rd grade - remember janitor coming into the classroom with hat in hand. Told Sister that the president had been shot and died.
The whole school went to the church to pray the rosary for him.
Years later heard of a Dallas cop coming down from the ROOF of the building with a rifle. The family of the witness was harassed for years about keeping quiet.
MANY thanks for your service.
My ‘jungle’ was the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, and my only combat experience was when I pulled shore patrol duty.
Second grade in St. Paul MN at St. Mark’s Elementary School on Prior. Sister Caroline came on over the intercom and announced. Then let the radio play. It was horrible. Kids crying.
“That’s all that was on the TV, and we were glued to it until Kennedy’s funeral was over.”
We were at Grandpa’s farm for Thanksgiving for that. His running commentary was hilarious. He HATED Democrats — had a picture of Eleanor Roosevelt in the bathroom so he didn’t “have to spend money on ‘physic’ (laxatives).”
“We hardly knew where a country called Vietnam was located, but we all were about to figure that out.”
LOL! I can top that one. I recall getting my first overseas assignment. I was sent to the personnel office to get my orders. I asked the clerk where I was going. She told me USASAFS Asmara. I asked where’s that? She said it was classified and pointed to a classified document. I was clueless, and had no idea where I was going. I had a port call at JFK airport with no destination on it. It was a very fast operation where I was informed of orders in the morning and fully processed out with a physical and on a plane in the afternoon.
While home on leave I went to the school library and discovered Asmara was in Ethiopia. I was told not to bring civilian clothes but did anyway. At JFK I was approached by a female army major that said I had to shed my uniform.
When I got to Asmara I discovered I was assigned to a US Army outpost called Kagnew Station that was an NSA listening post.
I hate the media….
America would have survive if Eisenhower’s vice president had won the 1960 election.
The destructive 60s and most everything that people have been trained to put onto LBJ, actually came from JFK, including the immigration law that ended us, Vietnam, Affirmative Action, unionized Federals, even the “Great Society” is from JFK’s “New Frontier”.
I laid out of school that day...I saw the news on TV and called my mother, who was a telephone operator...I started telling her about what happened and ended up on the phone with her for about 2 hours as she relayed what I was telling her to the other operators she worked with...
I was also in second grade, walking back into the school building after having been outside. One of the other kids told the rest of us as we passed him. I can't recall if we were officially dismissed at that moment or if we went back into the classroom first, but I do remember walking home - it was a short distance - where my mom was watching events unfold on the small b&w television.
I remember there being a serious atmosphere in my little corner of the world that late November of 1963, but there was no hysteria or any sea change in the family routine.
