The United States and Mexico have an opportunity to totally change the supply chain dynamic as it pertains to the US economy staring them in the face. We share a 1,924 mile border between one nation wealthy enough to buy things and another nation hungry enough to produce things.
What would happen if both governments worked together to create an economic development zone along both sides of the border by creating tax incentives to companies wishing to locate there? The minimum wage could be eliminated along this zone or a wage established that encourages business development. The possibilities are endless as to what type of products can be produced that have a direct access to the US market without the shipping cost of crossing the Pacific. This zone could put China out of business and if developed would begin to create a middle class in Mexico along the border further increasing the market.
The existence of such a zone would act as a giant magnet to millions of illegal immigrants currently located all over the United States. They could have their jobs and be able to enjoy their Mexican culture at the same time and many would relocate to this zone. As they relocate, jobs are created where they leave.
What many have observed as a "problem" can be turned into a "solution". President Trump, make it happen.
Did you come straight from GOPe central casting?
What other looney ideas do you have to strip America’s sovereignty and wealth?
They tried that already. It was called NAFTA.
Good idea, all we have to do is buy back the Mexican government from China...
...and large parts of our own!
A large percentage of illegals aren’t coming here to work. They’re here to get free stuff and sell drugs. I worked at a company that took a lunatic government deal. They had to hire off the welfare rolls. The workers either took the jobs or lost welfare. It was the most surly, dangerous and sabotaging work force I ever encountered. Drug use was rampant. These “sounds good” ideas never work.
Or we could get rid of tons of meritless regulations and feel good do nothing laws and let the American innovation and production engine do what it can still do.
There is existing tech out there than could *actually* secure our borders within a year or so.
If we were allowed to responsibly exploit our own natural resources, we could have manufacturing back in the US again.
Of not our supply chain, our national debit!
Been there done that.
How is increasing the availability and reliability of our supply chain harmful to America? How is encouraging relocation to the border of millions of illegal aliens harmful to America? How is creating job openings for Americans once they relocate harmful to America? There are tremendous economic positive effects for both Americans and northern Mexico. None of this has anything to do with "sovereignty".
If not...
Dismantling The Unconstitutional Portion Of Our Federal Gov't Will Solve both.
Study NAFTA. Sounds like a great idea, doesn’t work.
How about we just physically boot out the invaders and build manufacturing in, to use the leftists’ vile term, “flyover country” and the Mexicans can find their own way. Mexico is rich in resources and does not need our help.
It would also drain a LOT of The Swamp!
hey, we could just ask the Mexican states adjoining the USA if they wish to join the Union...Also ask the Indian reservations straddling the border if they’d like to become states in the USA, including the areas currently in Mexico, heheh.
Maybe invite all of Baja California to join up.
To those who say this undermines American job creation, deporting millions of illegals will do more than enough to raise wages on jobs in the US. We don't need to be making cheap crap in the US at wages competitive with 3rd world countries. That's not the path to prosperity anyway. But let's buy that stuff from friends, not from enemies.
This is a little different as it establishes a specified zone along the border itself in order to attract the technical abilities of the US and a labor pool less expensive than other areas. The fact that there is direct access to a market wanting to insure and stabilize it's supply chain is a huge incentive for those looking to profit from the products they create.
And to clarify - I’d still support tariffs on higher-end goods that can be made competitively in the US at a decent wage to rebuild industry and kneecap the Chinese. We just don’t need to onshore production of every piece of injection molded plastic or cheap textiles, etc.
And the cartels.
