Denny's says it's closing 150 of its lowest-performing restaurants in an effort to turn around the brand's flagging sales.
About half of the closures will happen this year and the rest in 2025, the company said during a meeting with investors Tuesday. The locations weren't revealed, but the restaurants represent about 10% of Denny's total.
Stephen Dunn, Denny's executive vice president and chief global development officer, said in some cases the restaurants are no longer in good locations. "Some of these restaurants can be very old," Dunn said during the investor meeting. "You think of a 70-year-old-plus brand. We have a lot of restaurants that have been out there for a very long time."
Others saw traffic shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic that have yet to reverse, he said.
On Tuesday, Denny's reported its fifth straight quarter of year-over-year declines in same-store sales, which are sales at locations open at least a year.
Restaurant inflation is outpacing grocery price inflation, which makes it harder for some customers to justify eating out, Denny's said. When they do eat out, they often head to fast-casual brands like Chipotle or fast-food chains. Denny's said family dining — the category in which it competes — lost the most customer traffic since 2020.

Hopefully, when Trump is back in the WH, many of these businesses can rescind their closure plans.
All American breakfast.
Kamala: "I left that baggie in the White House library because the blow in it was pretty harsh. Didn't buy from that guy again! Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah!"
The elites in California are pitching a fit and coming down hard on McDonald’s for charging such high prices, blissfully unaware that they caused the high prices because of outrageous minimum wage mandates.
Head, meet nail.
I only ever went to Dennys for breakfast. But these days eating breakfast out is almost as expensive as going to someplace like Texas Roadhouse for a sit down steak dinner.
Bad business. Dennys sucks. Dennys has sucked for a long time. Eventually they have to go under.
It is! We traditionally go out to VOTE as soon as the polls open on Election Day (or whatever Spring Elections we have in WI) and then we go out for Pancakes.
From 2020 to the last time we voted this past spring, prices have pretty much doubled.
But, it’s a ‘treat’ as I don’t have to sling the hash for ONE meal, so it’s worth it for me.
Wonder what ‘Election Day Breakfast’ will set us back THIS year? Ugh!
Wanna guess how many are in dem cities?
I remember Sambo’s. It wasn’t bad.
For a while there they tried re-naming it “Sam’s.”
In my area, the Denny's quality varies widely from store to store. One store was very popular for it's cleanliness and decor.
Simple reason, quality of management/staff varies from store to store.
Ahh yes 2020, the great Covid plandemic shutdown effect.
Let’s see:
Applebees
Best Buy
CVS
Family Dollar (Dollar Tree)
Macy’s
Outback Steakhouse
Red Lobster
Walgreens
Just to name a few.
Like McDonalds ... prices raised too high for many people to eat there.
One time I was on the road with the wife and we needed food, of course when you’re on the highway you pretty much have to go by the signs. Of the signs Dennys was the least bad. Get off the highway, pull into the parking lot, see that they share the lot with some hole in the wall Mexican place. I turn to her and say “the worst hole in the wall Mexican place is better than the best Dennys”, she agrees, we go there. And it was really good.
Dennys is generic American franchise food, designed to be inoffensive and unexciting. At their best they’re mediocre. Any mom and pop diner can do the same thing better. They did introduce me to potatoes O’Brien though, which I make much better than them. So I’ll give them some points.
No, Samos didn’t change to Perkins. Those were two separate companies. Sambbos simply close down vecause of threats have lawsuits from “offended” people.
Some of them may have been sold and refurbished by the company that owns Perkins.
In my opinion, Sambo’s was 10 times better than any Denny’s on their best day.
Bidenomics at work,
I hope my local Denny’s doesn’t close. About once every 2-3 weeks I crave a BIG breakfast. Their build your own Grand Slam is a great deal compared to most local breakfast joints and still tastes good.
4 eggs over easy, 4 well done bacon strips, 2 sausage links, and hash browns plus a bottomless cup of coffee - plus tax and a 20% tip for less than $20...
Denny’s is bland food that gives you indigestion. Same with IHOP.
