Could you please list the anti-virus softwares to replace my Kaspersky again? I lost the list and now the Kaspersky has ceased functioning. Thanks!

Windows Defender. Comes with Windows, works well. There’s really no reason to double up. All it does is slow your computer down as now 2 things are scanning every file.

All you need is Windows Defender. It’s free

I haven’t seen that issue with Avast, did you set “notifications” on the setting you preferred?

Microsoft says this and it is my experience.

“If you install a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus program Microsoft Defender antivirus will automatically turn itself off.”

For Avast go into settings and set your “notifications” preference.

There is also a personal privacy box you can uncheck to turn off offers.

Thanks

Avast will start doing it to you. They embed the code in your computer.

Maybe. If they believe it is an anti-virus. That keyword “compatible” means a lot. Who do they consider compatible? I don’t know, there might be a list somewhere. But why bother, virus scanning runs at a low level of the OS, who’s better at running at that level than the OS. Unless you’re hanging out in the dark corners of the internet, or downloading a lot of dumb browser add-ons you really don’t even need an AV at all. I get a “this is suspicious” ping from Defender maybe every other year tops.

As of now, here is what I'm using:

  1. I'm still using the Kaspersky Password Manager until such time as it stops working.

  2. I completely removed Ultra AV. It don't trust it. I removes what it thinks are viruses without prompting me first, and it interfered with the execution of other programs.

  3. I'm now using Windows Security (Defender) for my virus protection. I'll see how it goes, but so far I have no complaints.

  4. I also use NordVPN for my VPN. I always run with the VPN on. I use NordVPN's malware features to manage website ad blocking, tracking, URL cleaning, malicious website alerts, and machine vulnerability.

All of the normal antivirus programs would be compatible with Defender and Avast is definitely so.

Windows Defender is good but not the best at detections and not among the best, also other programs have additional security features and scans that Defender doesn’t.

thanks for the info about Ariva doing the annoying hard-sell popups. We were considering trying Ariva and now will look for something else. Another FRer has suggested that s.he likes free version of Bitdefender. We are going to look into that one

Thanks for the info! We sure wouldn’t want to go thru anything like this Avast problem again (and yes, it was a good free program for us, catching almost all viruses, so long as it remained that way)

Brave is attractive, but ... like most current browsers on traditional computers (except Firefox and Safari), it is based on Chromium, which is developed by ... Google.
