Looking for a creative way to quicken your recovery from surgery? The key may be found in listening to music, according to research.
Researchers analyzed existing studies on music and its role in helping people recover from surgery, narrowing a list of 3,736 studies to 35 research papers.
In their analysis, the researchers found that the simple act of listening to music after surgery, whether with headphones or through a speaker, had noticeable effects on patients during their recovery period:
Lower pain levels: Patients who listened to music had a statistically significant reduction in pain the day after surgery. Pain was measured using two validated measures that asked patients to self-report their pain levels: the Numeric Rating Scale (around 19% reduction) and the Visual Analog Scale (around 7% reduction).
Reduced anxiety levels: Patient self-reported anxiety levels were reduced by about 2.5 points, or 3%, as assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
Less opioid use: Patients who listened to music used less than half of the amount of morphine compared to those who did not listen to music on the first day after surgery (an average of 0.758 mg compared to 1.654 mg for those who did not listen to music).
Lower heart rate: Patients who listened to music experienced a reduced heart rate (around 4.5 fewer beats per minute) compared with patients who did not listen to music, which the authors noted is significant because keeping a patient's heart rate within a healthy range helps improve recovery by allowing effective circulation of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, especially to areas that were operated on.
The study authors noted that a reduction in cortisol levels when listening to music may play a role in easing patients' recovery from surgery.

Philip Glass vs Katy Perry...what to do?
A suggestion: music by The Carpenters.
Listen to the oldies vs new music to cure what ails you.
The new music will kill you : )
I played a little yesterday. It defintely lowers blood pressure. I still play an Echo harp as accompaniment. I always think of my pulmonologist and giving him the finger when I do so, lol. I’m sure he thought I would be dead by now.
One of my favorites...It makes me feel I should be in Bavaria tipping a beer, lol.

What has always speeded my recovery...
Getting the bleep outta the hospital.
Funny how well that works.
Also, singing out loud helps (for me). Sing a cappella (usually hymns), or sing along with recordings like Carpenters, (don’t laugh) Engelbert Humperdinck — something in a key that’s easy for you.
I believe that singing out loud helps keep you healthy, but JMHO.
I have a question about this. What kind of music are they going to play in a hospital? If it’s that stinking crap elevator music they usually have recorded, I’d just as soon take my chances without it. Need some music that’s a little more upbeat than what they usually have recorded. That stuff would make a healthy man sick.
People have known this for centuries. Since the beginning of mankind, music has been created during times of difficulty to relieve stress. For instance so much music we have today is based on the music created during the depression and from the economically-distressed areas of the Appalachian mountains.
There is a reason for the phrase “music to calm the savage soul”. It’s based upon reality. It’s why for years so many therapists recommend turning off electronics and playing calm music when upset.
Stress from a surgery or hospitalization is hard on the body. It increases glucose and blood pressure levels. Naturally when you reduce stress it helps the body heal quicker. Music reduces stress, therefore it helps in the healing process.
Mozart? Slayer? They don’t say
If only Karen had stayed behind the drums, she’d probably still be alive

Yes. Her body image wouldn’t have been an issue. And she could sing when she was drumming, so her amazing voice still would’ve been heard.
I cried when she died. Also Breitbart and Rush.
fascinating. Not as good as yours but...
