Insect Identification- Praying Mantis
October 13, 2024 | Protect Our Freedom

We found this amazing praying mantis on our front porch today. This is in the Silicon Valley, CA area near Palo Alto and Mountain View. I've never seen a yellow praying mantis before, always green. The mantis is good at camouflage and it's interesting this yellow guy is on our doormat of about the same color. We moved him off the doormat several times today, but he always goes back to the door mat. At first, we thought it was a leaf on the doormat, but realized it was a praying mantis.

They’re chameleon, they change colors to match their background. They’re awesome at catching and eating bugs and spiders... We have lots here in SoCal.

The adult Mantis is strong, quick and sneaky, but they are usually no match for a Murder Hornet. I’ve seen videos of such encounters. Let’s just say, the Mantis didn’t have a prayer!

I recorded a spider crawling across the rim of a garbage can. A mantis turns its head towards the spider, who instantly decides to evacuate the premises. (IIRC, it’s unusual for an insect to be able to turn its head)

Female mantis will eat the male’s head in the middle of the act. His nervous system is programmed to finish, anyway.

They can shift from green to yellow and back over a couple of days.

We had a praying mantis on our porch ceiling a few weeks ago. It was eight feet from the hummingbird feeder when we left to take the dog for a walk; when we returned it had moved to behind the porch light on its way to the feeder.

We removed it to a more suitable location, far, far away from the hummingbirds. We don’t use insectides on our lawn or plantings, so that praying mantis can do Circle of Life stuff on some suitable insect, not my birds!

Was the Praying Mantis Catholic or Protestant?

I found a brown mantis on a living room window the other day.

Mantises watch you. You can tell they are calculating whether they can take you down or not.

I had one land on me outside once. I almost killed it in my startled reaction. Luckily, I didn’t harm it.

Just yesterday, saw a video of a Praying Mantis (already fierce-looking) that had evolved into a hornet-looking predator.

(Moved on four legs).

They can change color for camouflage - I grew up in Upstate NY and saw many the “usual” green but also saw various shades of brown and gray depending on the background.

Despite what we call them, am not completely convinced they are actually praying.
