My parents were both immigrants: they came here legally & worked their butts off, no free flight into the country, no welfare, no EBT cards.

My father joined the USAF for the softer billet after his brother & brother in-law were drafted for service in the Algerian War after they had already emigrated. His younger brother joined the US Navy, volunteered for the Swift Boats during Vietnam but was turned down after the Navy had spent quite a bit of money training him as a machinist.

They didn't expect an easy life, just more opportunity than what they had left behind. My father had both his naturalization certificate & his honorable discharge framed because he was very proud to have become an American and to have served his new country.

And they never got any signs in French or "appuyez sur deux pour le français" on the phone either.
