Hurricane Milton has started to impact Florida, bringing terrifying tornados to the state's south as the historic storm set to hit Tampa Bay later tonight.
The once-in-a-century weather event's winds have begun to hit Florida's Gulf Coast, triggering fears of tall building collapses in St Petersburg, which sits next to Tampa, after city officials warned about tall construction cranes.
Three of the super-tall cranes are causing safety bosses the most worries, according to Fox 13.
Milton is a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 160mph, according to a 5am National Hurricane Center update.
It sits around 300 miles off the coast of Tampa and is moving towards the city at around 14 miles an hour.
Forecasters expect Milton to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130mph.
The greatest danger is posed by the wall of water, known as a storm surge, that Milton will whip up. That could see up to 15 feet of water inundate Tampa Bay. Residents have been warned to evacuate, with the city's airport closed yesterday.

I wouldn’t want to be within a mile of a tall construction crain during a hurricane. I often wonder how those things stay upright even in high non-hurricane winds.

Serious winds are blowing now at my place 15 miles south of Sarasota.

That old toad with the hand signals and chinless expressions was either hideous or hilarious; I couldn’t decide. So I guffawed and then slapped myself for it.
Ryan Hall Y’all will be going live soon. I learn so much watching his meteorologist (the young guy who is so smart)...note to myself to remember his name...lol
Sarasota
I am about 40 miles east of Tampa and the wind is starting to pick up. My area currently has a tornado warning and there is a confirmed tornado on the ground south of me in Lake Placid.

Are you going to stream the eye over your house?
WeathernationTV.com currently forecasts a maximum wind velocity of 49mph for 4am Thursday, Tampa Florida.
That’s an estimate and may be too high or too low. Forecasts often get pushed back. So, if they expect a peak at 4AM, the peak might happen at 6 or 8AM.
50 mph hour sounds serious, but not catastrophic to me. What do you think?
Storm surge for properties on the water is another matter. What happens to boats and boat docks?
Sometimes in Florida I will see a house on high stilts next to a house at ground level. One could take a picture of that at label one as optimist and the other as pessimist.
Gusts over 80 mph for Tampa and 110 mph for Sarasota:

Thank you for posting that.
Prayers for you and yours, FRiend. I have a SIL and nieces, nephews, and their families near you. One niece is a nurse, and she’s a really wonderful person to be around in troubled times. I know she’s very busy, especially right now. All hands on deck.
“We have cows!”
If anyone has heard of the Lt Dan story it appears they couldnt convince him to leave his boat.

Tampa Mayor confirmed they got Lt Dan to a shelter 🙏
If you are in the Tampa Bay area and being asked to evacuate please listen and leave to a safe location
Take it seriously, 28 ft waves reported recently in forward portion of storm. Winds in Tampa Bay will peak a lot higher than 50 mph (in my estimation, landfall will be around Clearwater at about 0200-0300). These spot wind forecasts are based on a coarse grid that does not totally nail down probable structure of the hurricane. Potential for 110 mph winds gusting 140 at least briefly as collapsing eye moves inland. Gusts over 100 just about certain. ... Yes it will weaken rapidly but probably not until after moving 20-30 miles inland, certainly hope to be wrong but I don’t see major weakening of this storm until 0600 (even so, inland winds will still be damaging, gusts to 100+ will be felt to Orlando).
Surge is “baked in” now, only question being whether max surge penetrates Tampa Bay or is held down by landfall being further south like Sarasota. If my predicted landfall is correct, unfortunately Tampa Bay will see major surge and very strong winds.
