Be Kind to your Fellow Freepers
today | Me

Posted on 10/03/2024 7:10:15 AM PDT by DiogenesLamp

I think many of us come here for some fellowship with like minded conservative allies and it makes us happy to see that we are not alone.

But, over the years I have noticed something that seems amiss to me, which is the lack of responses to people who have expressed their opinion.

Many is the time that I see a comment to which no one has replied; a situation in which no one responds to a Freeper who has expressed an opinion.

I think most, if not all of us, would likely enjoy an acknowledgement that people have read our comment and agree with it, or even that people have read it and disagree with it! (So that we can have an argument, which is something we contrarians tend to enjoy! :) )

I urge people to respond to comments from other Freepers, especially if that comment is directed at you. I encourage Freepers to acknowledge the people who have posted a message to you, because we all want to believe our opinions matter and are worthy of consideration.

At the very least give them a "+1" (which means "UpVote") to indicate you've read their comment and agree with it. A more thoughtful reply is even better!

Let people know you care what they think and are not indifferent to their existence.

Not only should this boost the amount of traffic on Free Republic, it should encourage a happier more pleasant experience for all participants. It may even lead to more people wanting to join Free Republic!

Good idea. I’m guilty of not always acknowledging replies. In the end, it’s just common courtesy, because it is, after all, a conversation.

I lurked a lot before jumping in. I also find it interesting as to what other people find interesting.

I do too. Some are better at expressing themselves than others.

I agree. Sometimes I feel like I’m posting into the wind because I get no responses. I wish we had a “like” button for that reason alone.

As far as posting comments in a Thread, It depends on the topic of the Thread. That’s one of the great things about FR. There are so many varied Threads. A Buffet of Topics.

There are, and many of them I don't find interesting. For example, I don't care anything about what Biden or the Cackling idiot says. I consider anything they say to be either idiocy or a lie, and just not worth reading.

But there are so many topics, we all should be able to find something to interest each of us, and if not, *CREATE* one!

I notice a lot of people on the national stage that I feel deserve a little profanity and some also deserve a good punch in the nose.

Well then, get to it.

It would also be nice if responses were ‘nested’ under the original post

I know there is a ‘find responses’ link, so the data is there

You’re perverted, twisted, and sick, Laz.

I admire that in a person!

I have a coffee mug that says “I am cancelling my subscription to your issues”,

Can I post that? 🤔😁

Absolutely!

I've always heard that men want to solve problems when they talk about them, and women just want to talk about problems because that makes them feel better.

That being said, i've known plenty of men who won't stop talking about their problems, but also won't *DO* anything about them either.

It becomes pointless to keep indulging such people in "talk."

To the point of being swollen and engorged.

There are items on the market to help with that...

I know...I know. Not funny at all since you're a guy.

I'm sometimes a misanthrope for this. I get embarrasesed at needs of our ego. My theory is that it should be satisfied in different spheres, beginning with family members. But the further out from there . . bread on the water.

Family and Friends should always be someone's first recourse for a sense of belonging, but I have come to realize that there are a lot of people out there who have lost their friends and their families have moved away. I would suggest we likely have a higher than normal representation of such people here, because many of us are old and no longer have people around us whom we can relate to.

I wish to give heart to these people, as do I think we all.

Isn’t that why other sites have a ‘like’ button?

FR UI is so outdated...this would be a welcome addition imo.

1. Thanks for posting.

You are welcome. I've been meaning to post about this for a long time, and I finally decided to do it. I'm not sure I came up with the best words to describe the idea, but I think I got the point across to most people.

2. Yes we are a 'family' which sometimes disagrees, but should be respectively done.

Or at least if you have to be disrespectful, do it with a smile. :)

3. I like when people do not agree with me and offer their reasons. This help for me to learn a different view point or actual facts which help me see the complete situation.

And this is exactly how we should always approach a discussion. One of the troubles I find with this approach is that a lot of people often don't have good reasons for their different viewpoint. Sometimes people believe things because it's "common wisdom", or because they have been misled by certain sources of information that they trusted to inform them accurately.

The advantage of discussion is that sometimes fallacious ideas can be unwound and corrected.

4. There is a wealth of experiences and a view points which needs to be offered and considered. I find this very helpful to read all this input.

So thanks everyone for the feedback....

Yes. Even the negative feedback. In fact, especially the negative feedback, because that allows us to correct our ideas or information.

Being kinder in replies and disagreeing respectfully will help a lot.

I know good FReepers who are no longer actively posting because of the hostility, mockery, and derision directed at them for posting something they think it important and others are interested in.

I've seen it, and I can only advise others to learn to love a good fight! This is the internet, and people should not take so seriously what they read from disembodied text on the internet.

Make light of the hostility, mockery and derision! Some people just feel the need to tear others down because the evil side of our nature often gives us a little pleasure from doing it. I guess we think we advance our own self worth by diminishing that of others. We should all resist these impulses.

Many times the crux of an issue is hidden within that bit of their comment rather than in the whole of it.

I am guilty of that a lot. As much as I try to resist, I generally discover I will use a 100 words when 10 would serve much better to convey my point.

While we’re at it…that’s the kind of comment that needs to disappear from this forum.
