A paper published in the journal Nature on Wednesday lays out the hidden toll of tropical storms in the continental United States. Looking at 501 events from 1930 to 2015, researchers found that the average tropical storm resulted in an additional 7,000 to 11,000 deaths over the 15 years that followed.
“It makes a lot of sense that a hurricane, or tropical cyclone — which is a substantial ‘shock’ to a community’s functioning — would lead to long-lasting effects,” said Sue Anne Bell, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan’s Center for Global Health Equity, who reviewed the study. Dr. Bell has researched the first-order impacts of natural disasters, such as ramifications for dementia patients whose routines may have been disrupted and care teams fragmented. Cancer patients who lived through Hurricane Katrina in 2005 had lower survival rates even years later, which probably had to do with disruptions to their treatment.
But the authors also suggest more subtle, long-term changes that could overwhelm hurricane survivors. Borrowing from retirement savings to cover an uninsured loss might lead to tougher financial circumstances down the line. The stress of losing a home could worsen heart conditions that ultimately prove fatal. Hurricanes can erode local government capacity, draining resources for priorities like road safety or firefighting.
And there are psychological effects, which can damage physical health. David Abramson, a clinical professor at New York University’s School of Global Public Health, followed a group of Katrina survivors for years. He noticed an increase in substance abuse over time, which could be connected to the trauma of seeing their lives upended.
“When things are invisible, politicians can’t respond to it, communities can’t fix it,” Dr. Hsiang said.

If there’s only one single role for government, one priority of the state, local, federal, even military budgets: it should be disaster preparedness and emergency recovery within our own borders.
I can tell you from personal experience, that a flood will eff your life. I had a business that was flooded out, 35 days after I had sunk $200K and way too much work into it, and the only things I was able to salvage were two plastic Rubbermaid trash containers. They were my $100K trash containers.
The area was not prepared for excessive rain and associated flooding. They need to stage practice emergency evacuation procedures for areas such as this.
That's hard. Women can't do it. Mostly men take care of things like that.
Notice how when a disaster happens during a Democrat administration, it’s time to look back a hundred years, and make airy philosophical observations about abstract megatrends.
Medical Imperialism. Given the chance the allopaths will consume every available resource. And it still won’t be enough.
As long as we continue filling our empty spaces with idiot invaders from all over the world, America’s death tolls will continue to climb when we have NATURAL disasters like floods, and other NATURAL storms.
Lahaina (“smart city” land grab)? Bundy Ranch (water and mineral rights)? Malheur Refuge (Uranium 1)? Anyone see a pattern?
“Americans are tougher and more resilient than the New York Times imagines.”
True, but floods are just the worst. Tornadoes are covered by normal insurance, and there have neen a lot of “500 year” and “1000 year” floods recently. The cleanup after a flood may be impossible for the elderly to do.
now we know where to put illegal immigrant housing
Ordinarily, hurricanes fizzle out by the time they reach the southern Appalachians. Was this a 5000 year flood? Maybe....New Orleans had several 100-year floods in less than a decade.
They need to get out of town when they say it’s heading your way. So many of these towns were in valleys...
I don’t know who the empty skulls full of mush are who are taking the freeloader invaders from jungle, desert, islands and other hot climates and putting them in states with cold, snowy climates. Real U.S. Government jackasses I guess.
The hurricane hit an existing low pressure system over that area-thus the massive amounts of rainfall. Plus orographic lift.
Oh really? The towns are in valleys. Huh. How is that?
Might it be that is the only GD place to build back in them hills and hollers?
Oh! They should evacuate. Where? Down the road out them hollers and stay just ahead of the flood?
Thus site is full of some real jackasses.
Don’t tell me they shouldn’t be living there either. Those people have lived in those hills and hollers since the beginning of this country.
They were the miners who mucked out the coal that built this country...that is until they forced the mines to close leaving these people destitute.
Where do you evacuate to? The roads go through those same valleys. There’s no shelter if you go into the hills above.
TheBiden/Harris regime is doing the same thing they did in Maui.

Maybe there is something to that Lithium mine thing.
Also Biden and the Hoe are finally going to show up there. I wager they are holding back help until it looks like they came in order to take credit for what all the people working ther asses off and using their own money to save people.
They are pure scum. I hope they get spit on when they arrive.
