I don’t find him to be insightful at all, it’s always “this could be from 1000 years ago”. He hikes out, and after a lot of rigamarole and narration he finally shows fleeting images which are an awful lot alike in every one of his videos — remains of a wall in a crack in a cliff face, petroglyphs, then panoramas of the surroundings.
This one was loaded up with a lot of different stuff, and I didn’t use the Roku this time, so skipping ahead was simpler. He spends a couple of minutes near the beginning doing an ad for Opera.

No, it’s to guide mail and passenger planes before electronic navigation. They used to put the names of cities and towns on roofs too.
