It’s confirmed! Mel Gibson set to produce epic TV series on the Great Siege of 1565 filmed in Malta

We knew he was in Malta for a good reason!

Hollywood star Mel Gibson has announced plans to produce a limited television series about the Great Siege of 1565, which will be filmed in Malta.

After a recent visit to the island to scout locations for his ‘Passion of the Christ’ sequel, the famous actor was captivated by Malta's rich history and impressive fortifications, confirming that the series will be shot on location, in the very fortresses where the siege took place.

Mel Gibson, famous for acting in blockbusters such as ‘The Patriot’, ‘Mad Max’, and ‘Lethal Weapon’, has also directed and produced films like ‘Braveheart’ and ‘The Passion of the Christ’.

Speaking to MovieWeb, he expressed his excitement about the project, describing the Great Siege as an incredible historical event. The series will focus on the dramatic defense of Malta, where 700 Knights of St John held off an invading force of 40,000 Ottoman Turks.

‘I'm also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story, and there's only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta. Because that's where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta against an onslaught from the Turkish and Suleiman sent 40,000 men and ships and, wow, the knights won. So, it's a pretty crazy, great story.’

While Mel Gibson will primarily serve as the series’ producer, he revealed that he is already collaborating with a writer to craft the script for this historical epic.

During his mid-September visit, the actor met with Prime Minister Robert Abela and toured key locations such as Valletta, Mdina, and Birgu.

Will you be watching Mel Gibson’s new television series?

Well this is good news. If it's anything like the novel, Angels in Iron, it should be absolutely epic. I'll be watching!

Described as Knights of St John versus Ottoman Turks.

Better described as Christians versus Muslims.

The Koreans are masters of the historical drama TV series. It’s long past time for people in the west to create their own series which glorify great exploits from our history.

Hollywood is hostile to our values, AND they no longer have to pander to those values in order to get most of the overseas revenue. High production value television is the way to go most of the time.

Looking forward to it. If it is realistic, it will be glorious in the depiction of the Muslims.

Get a used copy of “Angels in Iron” (or Ernle Bradford’s history of the siege) online. It’s a novelized, but very accurate, account of how the Knights of St. John the Hospitaller saved the West from Mohammedanism, just as the fleet of Don Juan of Austria did 8 years later at Lepanto. Unlike today’s faggotty, useless Christians, the Knights of St. John were MEN.

When I first read the books, I thought the story would make a fantastic movie...except for the fact that the movie industry is controlled by gutless pukes. It will be interesting to see if Gibson’s movie can get distribution and honest reviews.

Will definitely watch it. Visited Malta twice while on active duty with the USNR. Interesting place.

It’s about time that someone has given this epic battle the attention it deserves. This battle was the precursor to Ottoman expansion into the western Mediterranean. Malta was to be the launching point which never happened due to the Ottoman defeat coupled with their naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571.

For which network or streaming service is he producing it?

I've long thought the Battle of Antioch (1098 A.D.) would make a fine film. After their victory over the Muslims, many Crusaders claimed that they saw angels and saints riding alongside them into battle.

To a 19-20 YO sailor from a Kansas farm, the historic sites of Malta were thoroughly enriching. Visiting the fort with its canons still guarding Valetta Harbor was an awesome experience. The Knights of St. John on Malta were truly heroic in their defense of the Faith.

Malta was one of my favorite liberty destinations.

The battles were insane. A more fictionalized version is “The Religion” by Tim Willocks.
