A team of public health researchers has found, via analysis of health record data, that some regular coffee drinkers with high blood pressure may have a lower risk of developing dementia than people who do not drink coffee.
Prior research has shown that regularly drinking a moderate amount of coffee or tea can reduce inflammation. Other studies have shown that it can also promote blood–brain barrier health. Both factors have been tied to reducing the risk of developing dementia.
In this new study, the researchers wondered if a direct tie could be made between drinking caffeinated beverages and dementia. To find such a link, they turned to the UK Biobank, a database of health data for more than 500,000 people over the span of several years.
In their analysis, the research team looked for associations between regularly consuming either coffee or tea and a reduction in dementia risk. They also looked at other factors that could play a role, such as whether people had heart disease or other conditions, including hypertension.
They found that people with hypertension were more likely to develop dementia than those who did not have the condition. They also found what they describe as an association between people with hypertension who also regularly drank coffee or tea—those who drank one-half to a full cup each day had a lower risk of dementia than did those who did not drink either beverage.
They also found that the type of coffee consumed made a difference—those who ground their own beans, for example, saw greater rewards.
The research team suggests that consumption of caffeinated beverages by people with hypertension and the associated reductions in inflammation conferred by consumption are likely the reasons for the reduction in dementia risk.

From the paper:
“There was an association between the risk of dementia and coffee and tea consumption in the total population, and the relationship between the risk of all-cause dementia and the consumption of coffee and tea in hypertensive people showed J-shaped and U-shaped patterns respectively. People who drink 0.5–1 cup of coffee or 4–5 cups of tea per day have the lowest risk of dementia. The significant association between the amount of coffee and tea consumed and the risk of all-cause and vascular dementia were more likely to be found in the hypertensive population than in the non-hypertensive population. Consumers of ground coffee have the lowest risk of all-cause dementia and vascular dementia. There is no correlation between the temperature of hot beverages and the risk of dementia. Furthermore, a U-shaped relationship was observed between daily caffeine consumption and the risk of developing all-cause dementia and vascular dementia in individuals with hypertension.“
Who DOESN’T drink coffee regularly?
“IF you don’t believe the dead can come back to life just be around any coffee maker in the morning” applies. personally, I drink coffee for the safety of those around me.
Very interesting - I was just at my doctor, have high blood pressure, and was told to cut down on my coffee consumption, no more than one cup a day...
I don’t. Some days I drink a few sips if I eat breakfast, which I only do two or three times a week. I never acquired a taste for it. I also don’t care for any other bitter foods. Apparently, many people don’t taste bitter foods the same. Maybe they don’t even think coffee is bitter. Kk
“Everyone inherits two copies of a taste gene called TAS2R38. It encodes for a protein in the taste receptors on the tongue which allows us to taste bitterness.
People who inherit two copies of a variant of the gene TAS2R38, called AVI, are not sensitive to bitter tastes from certain chemicals. Those with one copy of AVI and another called PAV perceive bitter tastes of these chemicals, but not to such an extreme degree as individuals with two copies of PAV, often called “super-tasters”, who find the same foods exceptionally bitter.”

I’m almost there with you. I’ll do OK when not working, but at work I drink way too much coffee. Gotta slow that down. 1-3 6oz servings a day is a good standard.
I keep forgetting to.
Well it proves Harris doesn’t drink coffee
**People who inherit two copies of a variant of the gene TAS2R38, called AVI, are not sensitive to bitter tastes from certain chemicals.**
Didn’t matter as a teen. I just wanted to feel like an adult.
Who funded the study?
My cardiologist would opine that these results are probably due to the evil coffee killing off the hypertensives before the are old enough for dementia to set in...
On our bi-annual visits to him, my wife (86) and I (a 90-year-old hypertensive) look him in the eye and say “coffee bad” and then go home and have our usual 4-5 cups a day...
Good advice.
I’ve found drinking coffee minimizes dementia by helping keep one regular.
What about non-hypertensive people, I wonder.
