Warren Buffett, one of the wealthiest people in the world with a net worth of $142 billion, according to Bloomberg, is also known for his generosity. He has donated billions to charity over the years, but when it comes to his kids, handouts aren’t part of the deal.
In the HBO Becoming Warren Buffett documentary, Susie Buffett shared a story that gives a glimpse into her father's frugality. This wasn't the first time she had discussed it. Back in 2011, a Globe and Mail article mentioned that Susie once asked her father for a $41,000 loan to renovate her kitchen after she had a baby. She needed to make room for the high chair, but Warren's response was to tell her to "go to the bank like everyone else."

He is too busy with the deep state.
If I had his billions, I’d give my adult children a lump sum every 5-10 yrs that they had to manage until the next lump sum. They’d also have to have a regular job in order to get that money. When I died, they’d get a chunk of what’s left but I’d give half of it away. I wouldn’t spoil them but I’d give them a leg up, especially in an economy like we have today where most ppl are barely surviving.
Just because you don’t owe it doesn’t mean you’re not an ass*ole.
Before hearing this story I always thought he sounded like a pompous ass*ole. Plus he’s a BIG Dem. This just adds points to his AH scorecard.
The daughter did not ask for a $10,000,000 present. She asked her billionaire father for a $41,000 loan and was turned down.
Plus side: The daughter will learn the value of money.
Minus side: The daughter will learn to hate the father.
Buffett is known to be a poker player. A good poker player will learn to weigh the pluses and minuses of every move. Evidently Buffett did not do that here.
Side note: This assumes we know all there is to know about the incident. But maybe the daughter has welched on many previous loans.
“..With the costs of supplies to do a remodel today, 41K is cheap the appliances alone will run you 10K, flooring, sink, counters, cabinets 41K is cheap!!...”
Yep. We just finished our kitchen over this past summer. Appliances alone were $10K just as you stated. Granted, our cabinets and granite were of the higher end variety, but we were well over $40K by the time everything was finished. Stuff is expensive even with Bidenomics. /s
In this case, it's not relevant.
Likely more to the story than we know
At some point as a parent you need to cut the umbilical cord and the kids need to stand on their own. I have to stop myself from getting my daughter everything, her 11th birthday was a few days ago and she had asked for several items that IMHO she’d only use once or twice (e.g. a mushroom shaped hat). I told her if she wants it buy it on her own, which I know she has more than enough money, but she learned from her mom that daddy’s money spends better.
So his daughter is obviously an adult and needs to learn to be on her own.
We live in a $130K condo. It is expensive to me.
Warren lives modestly, in the same small house he has lived in since 1958.
He doesn't pamper himself with money so why should he pamper his children?
Bill Gates will take good care of his $$$.
Stupid headline. In the end Susie said dad was right.
I can’t form an opinion on a 10-yr old one-side-of-the-story from a very partial participant.
And before you complain, I don't approve but it's none of my business.
Exactly
If a child never learns to stand on their own they will never walk.
How many other bs liberal narratives do you like to parrot?
With him where?
It’s more leftist drivel propagandizing cutting out your own family from their inheritance. These leftists are doing the same to our nations and our people. Disinheriting them of their birthright.
He’s right. You respect wealth when you have earn and save it after expenses and taxes.
Oh BTW, I paid for my parents, not the other way around. How many of your kids would pay for your kitchen and bathroom remodel. They didn’t ask, I just did it. It helps that they were the best parents ever!
