The end of the summer in 2024 brought some excitement to the restaurant scene in Dallas-Fort Worth. The biggest talker is probably the $20 million spent on Nuri Steakhouse in Uptown Dallas. But there’s lots of loyalty for lower-priced restaurants, like the new La Rue Doughnuts in Trinity Groves and La Casita Coffee in East Dallas.
My next meal will be at a barbecue joint, and I’ve got a lot of smoked-meat spots to choose from.
I hope you find something delicious in our September 2024 Hot List.
If you like Jimmy’s Food Store in East Dallas, Ari’s Pantry is your kind of place. Ari Lowenstein opened his Italian grocery store in Dallas’ Oak Cliff in December 2023, selling a thoughtful list of pastas, sauces, olives, pizza dough, bagels and other staples. He even made recipe cards for his version of tiramisu and aglio e olio — a sweet touch, as noted in a profile by food writer Claire Ballor. Labor Day Weekend would be a great time to stop in and grab some ingredients for a long cook on Sunday or Monday.

Nice. We have some great German restaurants in Frankenmuth, Michigan. My nephew made good money as a waiter there last year but is doing even better as a waiter during the tourist season on Mackinaw Island.
The absolute BEST Mexican restaurant in America is in Highland Park(?), a place called Javier’s. I ate there on a business trip. Incredible.
I LOVE the Adolphus bar. The restaurant was pretty good too but a bit too swanky for my blood.
Not In-and-out Burger!!! Much better burger places here.... Kinkaid’s, Charley’s, Tommy’s, Chap’s to name just a few.
In its hey-day Oak Cliff was the Beverly Hills of Dallas.... it’s seen much better times, but gentrification is in progress and will improve no doubt. That being said, the sign at Risky’s BBQ in Fort Worth (Tarrant County) days it all...”Life is too short to live in Dallas County!”
True! LJB and North Central has one, as I recall from a visit in 2018. There was actually a better hamburger place within walking distance if you can believe it, but it looks like it’s now a Mediterranean food place (still likely not bad). And there was of course an excellent Mexican place right nearby, as is typical.
That reminds me, El Taquito on East Grand Avenue was always a go-to for me.

The last time I was there I ate at a place called Golden Chick. I wasn’t impressed.
Ate there about 6 years ago at Nick and Sam’s. I remember two things, steak was very expensive and one of the guys I was with almost knocked off one of the wall paintings.

And Ol’ South Pancake House.
Good List to try out! Thanks, already have it at the Bar we drink at for Happy Hour tonight. Just a bunch of very retired old rugby players.
Comments. Chuy’s. Great place, and a great location. It was here when I moved here in 1983. A staple.
Nuri Steak House in Uptown. Nick and Sam’s is my favorite and nearby so I will give it a pass.
Otura Sushi. In the Bishop Arts District. I go to Oishii as a good friend is a manager there.
Fred’s Hamburgers in Fort Worth. Greatness, but they closed down their best one as the land was so valuable in West Fort Worth that they got an offer, they could not refuse.
Talked about Moak’s BBQ just recently and will go over there to eat. We were in their for the last JFK assassination 60th anniversary to just get Margarita’s to go. We can do that down here in Dallas thanks to Covid relaxing the rules on Take Out and carry alcohol.
Thanks for the list. Will be fun to check them out. Have not been in Chicago since the weekend that had the Cubs WS Parade. What a weekend. Partied all weekend long. We went up to see Ireland vs. New Zealand in Rugby and what timing. Stayed at the Marriott on Michigan, which was party central.
Man, I was more a fan of the Altdorf, if they’re still around. It’s been a while.

A lot, or most, of the restaurants mentioned in this thread are way over my budget. I will offer one suggestion that I highly recommend. A buffet restaurant that I first frequented in the Houston Galleria area.
Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet in Plano, Texas.
The cost has, like everything else, gone up, but still worth it since the food is excellent and it’s an ‘all you can eat’ for the price.
