‘Massive brawl’ at Revere High School sends staff member to the hospital

A Revere High School administrator was injured after a “massive brawl” broke out just days into the new school year, according to the Revere Teachers Association.

In a news release Friday, the educators union alleged that a high school administrator was hit in the face as they attempted to break up a fight on the third day of school. While the RTA alleged that the staff member was knocked out in the fight and had to be taken to a hospital by ambulance, Revere Public Schools disputed both claims.

The district confirmed there was a physical altercation involving several students during the transition into lunch period Thursday. In a statement, Revere Public Schools said one staff member was struck during the fight and was taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution,” though they are home now and reportedly feeling fine.

But for the Revere Teachers Association, Thursday’s incident is another rallying point in an ongoing battle over school safety.

“Revere educators saw this coming as we have consistently raised these concerns, and now our schools are being impacted by this avoidable incident,” RTA co-presidents Michelle Ervin and Jane Chapin said in a statement. “Revere educators know that our working conditions are our students’ learning conditions, and we are deeply frustrated as we have provided solutions to address this health and safety crisis. It has fallen on deaf ears.”

The union further alleged that many students were also involved in an after-school altercation this week on Beach Street near Revere High School. According to the Revere Teachers Association, a clip of the incident made the rounds on social media and showed what appeared to be a firearm.

Why didn’t the teachers use their ‘teacher voice’ and tell the rioters to Mind Their Own Business?

Is this the wonderful “socialization” that homeschoolers are missing out on? ( Just wondering.)

> the school staff member “acted stupid. <

It’s wise to leave breaking up a fight to the professionals (school security or the police). But sometimes an average Joe just has to step in.

And I should know. I was teaching in an inner city high school at the time. I turned a corner, and a large girl was repeatedly slamming a small girl up against a hallway wall. (Black on black, by the way.)

Girl-girl fights are the worst. But I had to step in, as the smaller girl had at least one head wound. Her blood was smeared all over the wall. So I broke up the fight. And yes, I took a punch in the process. Still, no regrets.

And what happened to that large girl? She was expelled. But hold your applause. In most city school districts, “expelled” means just moved down the road to another city school. No real punishment at all.

One more thing. Most city high schools cannot be saved. Again, I should know. The school where I taught still has honors classes and many good kids. But the trajectory is obvious. It gets worse each year.

I’d like my tax money which is intended for children’s education to be made available to me for children’s education.

I agree with you. I never attended a public school and my parents paid for my education AND they paid their property taxes … on my dad’s working class income.

Of course, this was before the teachers unions would strike the public schools and hold out for their demands. And I have personally heard public school classroom teachers tell their students to go home and insist to their parents to vote yes on school levies.

Our Modern English pronouns go back to Anglo-Saxon pronouns as they evolved through the Middle Ages. Our third person plural pronouns are actually of Scandinavian origin (they/their/them), but 'em may be a survival of an Anglo-Saxon pronoun rather than a shortened version of "them."

We could use a neutral third person singular pronoun (either he or she) but evidently people in the Middle Ages saw little need for such a pronoun--perhaps because gender roles were more clearly differentiated than today. "It" can be used in some situations but doesn't seem appropriate when referring to adult human beings.

So that's why people use "they" when it refers to one person but they don't know whether it is a man or a woman, or want to leave it undetermined. It does come across as grammatically incorrect to people who care about correct grammar, but they are probably a dying breed.

*But sometimes an average Joe just has to step in.*
You should point to the biggest black kid (male) and demand his help.

*In most city school districts, “expelled” means just moved down the road to another city school. No real punishment at all.*
The new school’s principal should read the riot act to the kid. One last chance. Chances are the new principal is scared or just mailin’ it in.

*The school where I taught still has honors classes and many good kids. But the trajectory is obvious. It gets worse each year.*
Vouchers/school choice 100%.
